Hilda Solis, Labor nominee, faces tax questions
LA Times ^ | February 6, 2009 | Peter Nicholas and Dan Weikel

U.S. Rep. Hilda L. Solis, President Obama's choice for Labor secretary, faced new obstacles after lawmakers who were expected to vote on her confirmation Thursday abruptly canceled the hearing amid reports of back taxes owed by her husband.

Solis, a Democrat from El Monte, is at least the fourth Obama nominee whose confirmation has been complicated by tax troubles.

The Obama administration conceded it had not discovered on its own that California tax liens had been filed against Solis' husband, Sam H. Sayyad. The White House learned about the liens -- a matter of public record -- on Tuesday in the form of questions from USA Today, according to an administration aide.

After the newspaper informed the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee of the tax liens, the panel called off the hearing so members could review the information. A new hearing was not immediately scheduled.

There seems to be a pattern of Democratic tax cheats....maybe the whole left congress should be investigated also since it seems to be de rigueur for Democrats.

I think it’s time Obama convened a national search to find one Democrat politician who isn’t a tax cheat. They would make a great example for the rest of us schmucks.

"Bombshell: Obama Labor Nominee's Family Business is a Tax-Evader and Blew Off Requirements Under Health and Safety Regs Here at National Right to Work, we've kept a close watch on Hilda Solis, the union-activist California Congresswoman nominated by President Obama to serve as Secretary of Labor.

We've told you about Solis' hypocrisy on the secret ballot issue, her admission that she is not "qualified" to discuss Right to Work, her refusal to answer basic questions on key labor issues, and her position as treasurer (which she failed to disclose to Congress) with a Big Labor lobbying group.

"Now USA Today reports that Hilda Solis is the fourth major Obama nominee to be faced with a tax scandal:

I wouldn’t get my hopes too high on this one, just yet. California is notorious for wrongly claiming back taxes and even more terrible about removing paid liens.

Here’s an example. I was “liened” for $5600.00 from the EDD, for (supposedly) underpaid payroll taxes. Finally, I got a hearing and my accountant and I proved that my returns were accurate, they were using wrong tables or some such bs.

Did the lien go away? Nope. They just changed it from owing $5600.00 to a paid lien of $2000.00, which was the correct amount that had already been paid.

The story doesn’t end there, either. Due to Gov. Davis’ software boondoggle, the State had installed new software, and then, after the public outcry, had to remove it and re-install the old software. Now, not only did the lien not go away, it came back as (you guessed it) $5600.00.

Craig Ferguson of CBS’s Late Late Show was discussing Obama coming down on Corporate executives.

“Finally some accountability in Washington.....But I’m thinkin’ if they’re going to introduce accountability, shouldn’t Obama start with making his own people pay their taxes?

WHAT is going on??

These people he’s picking for the cabinet... they’ve all gone to the Willie Nelson school of taxes......
Step one.....roll a joint
Step two....forget about your taxes!

Craig Ferguson Feb. 4, 2009

He went on with a skit about our ‘foot in mouth’ VP, Joe (Stand up Chuck!) Biden. Maybe some of our homegrown comedian enablers will get the message...finally!

Thanks for that link. I wished I had read it before I made my earlier post. LOL

BTW, Gibbs is wrong. They are a “Sole Proprietorship”, that being the case, they are joint owners (community property) as husband and wife.

I’m not sure of the nature of these taxes, but maybe the real question becomes did both husband and wife file and sign a joint tax return in California for the period in question. If it is joint, they are both providing cross guarantees as to its accuracy and under the law they can’t claim ignorance of the matter.

There seems to be a pattern of Democratic tax cheats....

Common denominator: Rahm Emanuel and David Axelrod are the men behind the curtain fumbling the vetting process, or they are drunk with so much hubris by the "we won so we can do whatever we want" mindset and they are shoveling the crap as fast as possible (I love mixed metaphors).

Personally, I say we go the liberal route with this.
The liberal would fault everyone anywhere NEAR the crime.
So with their logic, it doesn’t matter if it were the Husband or Wife, Daughter, mechanic...THEY’RE GUILTY!!!

It’s the least we can do..

Democrats like high taxes, because they don’t pay them.

"We don't pay taxes. Only the little people pay taxes ..." — Leona Helmsley

What Leona Helmsley didn't understand is that she was one of the "little people". She was merely rich, so she was sent to prison. To cheat on your taxes and get away with it, you have to be a public "servant".

Why is Ted Kennedy for Death Taxes, because his estate is set up with legacy trusts that won't be taxed.

Why is Bill Gates for Death Taxes, because all of his estate will go to a Foundation that he runs and will remain as his control in his legacy and never see death taxes.

Why is Warren Buffet for Death Taxes, because like Bill Gates all of his estate is going to the Gates Foundation and will never be taxed AND he owns Berkshire Hathaway and they are a very large Insurance Company among other things and the Insurance industry is practically dependent upon selling Life Insurance to finance the payment of Death Taxes.
