CHICAGO (CBS) ― Citing harsh weather, high sales taxes, and public corruption, Forbes Magazine named Chicago the third most miserable city in the country in its 2009 survey.
Forbes list ranked Chicago more miserable than Buffalo, Detroit, and even Flint, Mich., the former auto manufacturing town whose gloom was immortalized in Michael Moore's "Roger and Me."
The city boasts being the hometown of President Barack Obama, a leading contender for the 2016 Summer Olympics and an impressive record for the Cubs last year, Forbes points out.

With this past year, Chicago has surpassed Detroit’s exportation rate of both crime and despair. I think I remember reading somewhere that Detroit’s looking for stimulus funding to regain their previous export margin.
Have not been to Chicago for a few years. For it to be rated worse than Detroit must mean it has degraded at an astonishing rate in that time. Detroit is by my estimation a complete and total wreck on almost any measure one could care to use.
Actually, If I’m not mistaken former Senator Obama, was ‘supposedly’ born in Hawaii, started learninig goofy marxicist ideoligy in New York, and landed himself in Chicago, (Which has been courppted for like, ‘forever’).
But I digress, what do I know, except that Obama was a former CORN attourney (SP), citing just the other day how banks were not being honest with thier records, and yet this fooltard was one of the representative that forced banks to do the bidding of ACORN and the like. I think it was Jefferson, or some other founding father, that said “We get the government we elect”. I’d like to propose that if you know nothing about politics, or more importantly, if you have never paid a dime in taxes (not due to an imcapacitation beyond Your control), Maybe you should’nt be allowed to vote? elstwise we get a welfare state?
Oh yea, label me racist...

Coming to a city near you?
This is ludicrous. Chicago is still a wonderful place to live in and visit. I have lived here for 45 yrs except for two in Detroit. There is no comparison between these cities and Chicago on any serious point. Of course, the weather is not for the weak.
Avoiding the Murder neighborhoods is not hard and I raised a wonderful family here and have never regretted moving here from a small Arkansas town.
Hate the place, its politics and truly feel for the poor people who don't have the means to leave - And I'm certain that if they did they would be gone. Just a dump, Kwame’s Kingdom.

I actually spent a week in bloomfield hills last year for a medical procedure, and found the area quite pleasant.
I lived there in one of the worst ghetto areas in 1974-6, the area around Wayne St. Having formerly lived into some of the worst of Chicago, Woodlawn around the UofC, and believe me there is no comparison. I had never seen a corner store where the cash register was in a cage of iron until arriving in Detroit.
But I found the most glorious prize of my life there, my beautiful wife who gave me 20 yrs of happiness and two great sons before joining our Lord.
And living there was interesting in an all black neighborhood we had a sweet old couple next to us and I never felt endangered.
It is. Just too close to Detroit such that people who haven’t been here tend to think everywhere in Southeast Michigan is a cesspool like Detroit.

Speaking as one who enjoyed his time in Bloomfield hills, generalizations kill small areas; but for someone planning a totally voluntary trip, I can understand their viewpoint - you have this black hole city eating up the near side of the map - why bother with all this space off to the side when you can go to xyz and it all is supposed to be generally nicer in both the city and outside the metro area?
This sort of disparity between urban reality and the nearby burbs or even rural areas is repeated so many places, and detroit is one on the avoid list. I have been a number of places in the US and western europe (for purposes of this comparison), and my impression of detroit (metro) was among the lowest I have ever had of any place, and these were the last trips in over a decade of extensive travel. I felt like I was being driven through a ghetto 10 miles long.
Unless you really are out to see the united states, I personally can think of many areas with both *urban* and suburbian/rural appeal I would far more prefer to visit before the detroit area.
If winter travel is your thing, it’s just as cheap to get to reykjavik, and the scenery is much nicer...

this is code for it was the worst in terms of my personal view, but driving through parts of (south?) glasgow made a very poor impression as well and it interfered with just saying detroit made me wish I had a gun.
I grew up in the City of Detroit, and I can tell(almost) all of you that it is one of the worst pits in the U.S.A.
I would really rather go for a stroll in downtown Baghdad than in my old neighborhood around City Airport.
