Economy not all Uncle Sam needs to oversee

Sunday, February 15, 2009

You know, maybe a little more “government oversight” is just what we need.

As long as we do it my way.

I was determined to have a good day last week, but that dream was cut off, literally, by one of the many people who still don’t understand what the sign “yield to ramp” means. Maybe they can’t read, I don’t know. But I do know that I’m getting tired of slamming on my brakes when I’m the one on the ramp, and I don’t think I’d mind your insurance buying me a new car.

Maybe I could have a little government guy on the corner with a laser gun, ready to shoot out the tires of offending motorists. Oh yeah.

When I did get to work that day, the place was abuzz with the hottest new Internet video. I’ve never seen YouTube before (really, not once), but evidently there is a video posted by some doting parent of his child experiencing the aftermath of a trip to the dentist. It’s not clear what type of drug the boy is on, but he’s definitely out of his blessed little head.

Now, I know taking your child to the dentist is perfectly normal. What isn’t normal is videotaping your doped-up child for your own amusement and then sending it out on that super highway of wasted brain cells so that everyone in the world can see what a great parent you are.

Wasn’t it just a few months ago that we were all outraged by those photos of a toddler smoking pot? Children on drugs certainly weren’t funny then. If I just had a little “government oversight” over the Internet, maybe people would stop wasting their time on mindless entertainment and remember what it’s like to pursue worthy endeavors. Sweet bliss.

And speaking of terrible parents who should never be allowed to procreate, can we muster up a little more scorn for that octu-mom? I never understood why anyone would want a litter of babies. I mean, these people are warping nature herself, and to what end? So we can have more people like them running around? What’s so great about their genes anyway?

I’m thinking we need a little “government oversight” to make sure whacked-out California doctors don’t go around filling the wombs of unwed, jobless women with babies they obviously cannot afford or raise properly.

And in my world, no one would be able to procreate at all, naturally or artificially, without some sort of clearance first.

I know this is all a little far-fetched, but now that the stimulus bill is putting the government in control of our money and socialized health care is but a fulfilled promise away, that kind of government control can’t be far behind.

Maybe we can find a way to do away with the stupid people altogether. Who knows? People might stop licking metal posts outside in the winter, leaving their children and pets in the car in summer, and they might finally learn not to post anything on their Facebook accounts that they don’t want everyone to read.

A girl can only dream.

I love the little disclaimer at the bottom of this article:

Unfortunately, that's the problem with 'government oversight'. Americans are generally okay with it as long as it affects what someone else wants to do, but not when it directly impacts them. Sadly, they vote in those in favor of much 'government oversight' (i.e. Obama, Kerry, Pelosi) and then realize too late that they made a mistake.

NY Times op-ed today was calling for some new government bureaucracy to over salmonella testing at peanut butter factories.
