GLENN: Can anybody see that this stuff doesn't work? I mean, do we need to look past California? Can we stop and just look at California for a second? The entire state is near a shutdown. Lawmakers now can't come to an agreement on how to patch the gigantic hole in the budget. They are one short, one vote short to pass the budget. The state is poised to start laying off as many as 20,000 government workers. So you have some concept, the hole is so big, if they fired all employees, all state employees, they would only have half of what they need. If they shut down all prisons, that's only an extra 25%. They would still be 25% short.
But what I don't understand is how come California doesn't use Obamanomics? I mean, I really don't understand how come California just doesn't spend more. If they would just spend more, they could create more jobs.
How is this being portrayed in the media? Quote: Ideological Republicans won't adapt and are blocking progress. Arnold Schwarzenegger is a Republican and he helped negotiate this budget. Ideological Republicans won't help it pass. Of course in reality they're just saying, you know, the Republicans, "We can't cure our obesity by another year at Pizza Hut. Maybe we should hit Saladworks. Let's give that a whirl."
Well, there are some cuts in the budget, $15 billion worth, not insignificant. If you haven't believed me before when I say this is a crisis that is growing out of control, what else do you think would get Californians to cut their budget by $15 billion?

I might just move there. The lunatics have turned my beloved California into a f*ing basket case. I really, realy hate them.
I hear ya man. I live here too and its a hell hole. And Glenn is right, the media will always ignore the great things Sarah has done for Alaska, they only report on garbage, God forbid they actually report that Alaska actually has money to SPARE, unlike our state which is bankrupt
The media is also ignoring Texas’ success. Texas has the only city in the CONUS predicted to be *adding* jobs this year.
The federal government won’t allow Alaska to drill in ANWAR, and their governor is vilified by the DC establishment and turned into a national joke by the US media.
Perhaps secession isn’t such a bad idea for Alaska. They could become a mini-Kuwait economically w/out the Muslims, and they could watch the rest drown with the idiot Obama leading us.
“Blue Encroachment” has been taking over all over the country...Look at the election maps, county by county they take over the states by controlling the big cities. And now the ‘Rats are trying to play games with the electoral-college so that the states EC goes to whoever wins the pop-vote nationally. A politician would only have to campaign in a dozen or so states to win....”fly-overs” would be permanantly forgotten.
We would seriously consider moving there if they seceded. Drive the Anchorage liberals crazy (hopefully to Hollywood) to have many conservatives show up to work in Alaska.
Alaska and Nebraska. Maybe it’s the aska that is economically protective.
It is insane to have oil underground and not produce it. It must be the rich people, the same types who keep windmills from being set up off Cape Code.
Alaska receives more money from the federal government than any other state.
The vermin party controlled media know perfectly well that Alaska has been extremely successful under Governor Palin.
It is about “The Agenda”, not the truth.
Alaska does get a lot of Fed. $$. A lot of it is supposedly for homeland security - proximity to Russia and protecting our oil supply.
We have citizens here reelecting some of the stupidest people on the planet, over and over and over....Pelosi, Maxine Waters, et al. We have the worst educational system. Our kids cannot spell, let alone do basic math, which is why they are in financial trouble.. All brought to you by the most caring, most compassionate party...the Democrats. Great Society..my ass!!!! We SUCK!!!
All they would have to do is drill and balance their budget.
Is that too simple for the Sierra Club West and the rest of the wackos to understand?
But, but, but it’s just a small state with little population and I bet they don’t allow “immigrants” to pick their veggies there so that just means Americans are doing the jobs American’s in the lower 48 won’t do...rolling my eyes at CA, what a waste of a natural beauty of a state...
I am totaly in favor of alaska and texas seceding and forming their own country. the two biggest states and most the oil. it would be amazing.
I use to be from Illinois and apologize.
Right. But the money also produces jobs, etc.
My point is, let’s not make Alaska out to be self-sufficient. It isn’t.
Conversely, California gets less back from the Fed than they said to Washington. Now, with the “big economy” states on the ropes, a lot of the “little economy” states are gonna suffer.
self ping for later.
>> [Palin] turned into a national joke by the US media.
I like Palin, and she’s not a national joke - period.
Sarah Palin is such a moron. Only an idiot governor would have a balanced budget and a surplus. It just shows you how dumb she is. So what if her state is economicaly stable, she doesn’t offer us the HOPE that OUR President offers us. It’s okay if he runs then federal government into the ground becuase he gives me HOPE.
This was all sarcasm by the way.
I Alaska succeeded from the union I would be on the next plane out of La to Anchorage. Then I would joinh her militia to protect our new nation from the toltarian government in the US.
Calif. does have oil off shore but Arnie and Envornut will not drill for it.
That’s right. The media at MSNBC and CNN and ABC and CBS and PBS are the national jokes.
Homeschool, Homeschool, Homeschool.....
“It is too bad California does not have oil reserves on land or off shore.”
You do. But the FEDGOV shut your oil down. It’s still there and just needs the spigots turned on. But, it’s not gonna happen with Dear Leader in charge.
OIL AND GAS SEEPAGE FROM OCEAN FLOOR REDUCED BY OIL PRODUCTION November 18, 1999 (Santa Barbara, Calif.) Next time you step on a glob of tar on a beach in Santa Barbara County, you can thank the oil companies that it isn’t a bigger glob. The same is true around the world, on other beaches where off-shore oil drilling occurs, say scientists, although Santa Barbara’s oil seeps are thought to be among the leakiest. Natural seepage of hydrocarbons from the ocean floor in the northern Santa Barbara Channel has been significantly reduced by oil production, according to two recently published peer-reviewed articles, one in November’s Geology Magazine, the other in the Journal of Geophysical Research - Oceans. The Santa Barbara Channel provides an excellent natural laboratory, as it is among the areas with the highest levels of seepage in the world, said co-author Bruce P. Luyendyk, professor and chair of the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The studies were not funded by oil companies, but rather by the University of California Energy Institute and the U.S. Minerals Management Service, states Luyendyk, responding to the fact that the results favor off-shore oil production and are opposed by some environmentalists. “We’ve done a good piece of science,” said Luyendyk. “We’ve developed a good understanding of a natural process. It’s all public data; it’s all straightforward. If I thought the study was compromised I wouldn’t be involved in it.” Most of the seepage is methane, a potent greenhouse gas which escapes into the atmosphere, said Luyendyk. About 10 percent of the seepage is composed of “higher hydrocarbons,” or reactive organic gases which interact with tailpipe emissions and sunlight, creating air pollution. The researchers state that the production rate of these naturally-occurring reactive organic gases is equal to twice the emission rate from all the on-road vehicle traffic in Santa Barbara County in 1990. According to the articles, studies of the area around Platform Holly showed a 50 percent decrease in natural seepage over 22 years. The researchers show that as the oil was pumped out the reservoir, pressure that drives the seepage dropped. “If the decrease in natural seepage found near Platform Holly is representative of the effect of oil production on seepage worldwide, then this has the potential to significantly alter global oil and gas seepage in the future,” state the researchers in the article “The World’s Most Spectacular Marine Hydrocarbon Seeps: Quantification of Emissions “ in the Sept. 14 issue of the Journal of Geological Research - Oceans. They continue, “For example if the 50 percent reduction in natural seepage rate that occurred around Platform Holly also occurred due to future oil production from the oil field beneath the La Goleta seep, this would result in a reduction in nonmethane hydrocarbon emission rates equivalent to removing half of the on-road vehicle traffic from Santa Barbara County. In addition, a 50 percent reduction in seepage from the La Goleta seep would remove about 25 barrels of oil per day from the sea surface, which in turn would result in a 15 percent reduction in the amount of tar found on Santa Barbara beaches.” They conclude by saying that the rate of increase of global methane atmospheric concentrations has been declining for the past 20 years, and that a “worldwide decrease in natural hydrocarbon seepage related to onshore and offshore oil production may be causing a global reduction in natural methane emission rates.”
Actually oil prices shot thru the roof, no more funding problems. Still dems wanted to spend every penny, so did alot of our repubs. Palin fought them right from the start; I didn't think she would win, but she sure did and all of Alaska is glad she's running the show.
Alaska will weather this economic storm; now only if the feds would permit more resource development. The feds would rather californians sell cheezbugers back and forth than have Alaska create actual wealth from what the land provides.
I wonder if the truth will ever be told why some states are doing just fine and others economic failures.
What Palin did was get government out of the way of the free market and enforce the laws .That is the only thing government can do to not destroy an economy.
Anyone that thinks that government or government money can produce productive, necessary jobs is uninformed. The bigger the government debt rises the more in trouble the economy is. The U.S. has what a 15 trilllion $ dept and $50 trillion more in unfunded liabilities? Why haven't all those untold trillions that the government has and is borrowing, why haven't they produced non-government jobs or results? Answer because government/socialism doesn't work.
The only thing government is “needed” for is for law enformcement and security as in national security, border security, or for the enforcement of private property laws and laws that protect indidvidual rights to life, liberty, justice, freedom of speech, and private property.
Anyone that thinks that a chicken brain like Obama or Pelosi can “fix” or run the economy also must think that Polosi can tell the millions of expert business owners what technical equipment they need to order in real time better than then all these expert business owners put together can with their OWN money in real time. Anyone who thinks that Obama can run or fix an economy better than millions of expert busniss owners in the free market must be a Democrat/liberal or a someone brainwashed by the liberal media and government schools.
I call for separation of government and economy.
I wouldn't think any one of these government morons would be able to fix my toilet much less understand one thing about what multi-core processors to produce at Intel corporation or how to build an offshore oil platfomr from Exxon. They can't even tell one of these business how to run their business much less all of them at the same time as the media has us believing.
I doubt Obama or Pelosi could even change my oil in my car.
These morons haven't even ever had a real job. It's Incredible that people think these are our “leaders” and that we should follow what these idiots say and that these idiots should be allowed to run more of the economy.
Tne liberal media and government schools have so brainwashed the public that they have the people believing that corrupt, incompetent, evil, government politicians have the God-like ability to simultaneously understand the changing needs of all of the varied millions of expert business owners and consumers all at the same time instantaneously as the free market actually does.
Yes... It was Alaskan citizen’s money first before the federal government confiscated it! Think about that hero!
“Alaska receives more money from the federal government than any other state.”
Where did you see that?
The tax foundation publishes a yearly report on how much states send to DC and how much they get back. Some states break even, but most states are either on the negative or positive side of the ledger.
What is particularly disturbing is that the states on the negative side of the ledger — those that get back less than they send — are now in deep financial trouble. So, the states on the positive side won’t be getting their usual funding.
Kalifornia is the 8th largest economy in the world. They should be self supporting and not need federal money.
But they aren’t.
Why? They spend money for things like healthcare and schools for illegal immigrunts.
They have the tighest vehicle inspection and emission laws in the US, requiring different vehicles than the rest of America uses. That costs more.
They import a considerable amount of their energy from outside California because they are scared to produce their own for fear of disturbing a diddlebug.
California has vast oil reserves offshore but won’t use the oil or the jobs oil production creates.
California has the highest tax rate in the US. They also have the highest minimum wage, the highest unemployment benefit, the highest paid state workers, the highest welfare benefits in the US.
California has the potential to be a great state, self sufficient, and great job opportunities. But when they tax business out of existance, tax the people extensively, and get too generous with the money they are going down the tubes. And they are probably too big to fail so we reward stupidity and irresponsibility??
I think the states with fiscal responsibility can do fine without california draining their success. Good managers (CEO’s) get many benefits and are well paid. Consequently bad managers should be jobless. We don’t have to put up with their excuses. Fire them. tough cookies. Accept responsibility for screwing up rather than pointing the finger of blame at Bush or whoever. Come back when you have learned something.
First of all, gubmint programs have produced some fairly interesting technology, i.e. GPS, the internet, satellite communications, etc. etc. etc. To go back even more in history, it was a gubmint grant that got the telegraph up and running in the U.S. when private industry turned its nose up at it in favor of the Pony Express.
Alaska simply doesn’t have the tax base necessary to support a sophisticated infrastructure.
They actually could be self-supporting if they weren’t sending money to other states.
Federal Tax Burdens and Expenditures: Alaska is a Beneficiary State
Alaska taxpayers receive more federal funding per dollar of federal taxes paid compared to the average state. Per dollar of Federal tax collected in 2005, Alaska citizens received approximately $1.84 in the way of federal spending. This ranks the state 3rd highest nationally and represents a large rise from 1995 when Alaska received $1.21 per dollar of taxes in federal spending (then ranked at 17th highest nationally). The nearest states and the amount of federal spending they received per dollar of federal taxes paid were: Hawaii ($1.44), Oregon ($0.93), Washington ($0.88) and California ($0.78)
...and for California.
Federal Tax Burdens and Expenditures: California is a Donor State
California taxpayers receive less federal funding per dollar of federal taxes paid than the average state. In 2005, California taxpayers received only 78 cents in federal expenditures for every dollar in federal taxes. In 1995, by contrast, California taxpayers were receiving 94 cents in federal expenditures for each tax dollar.
Comparing the amount of federal taxes sent to Washington with the amount of federal spending coming back to the state
Go ahead and name what technology all these thousands of unnacountable government agencies like EPA,FEC,HUD, SSI,IRS,HHS, etc have produced for all the trillions of Dollars they cost, and give me an cost to production ratio analysis. You know what technologies these governement agencies produced last year? Nothing, but they burdened the American Economy with taxes, regulations, a huge and growing debt that is growing at more than 5 billion per day and growing and growing to untold trillions ( look at the debt ticker). And Democrats/liberals like you think that is the way to prosperity to borrow trillions upon trillions to throw at inefficient uneeded government programs? That is why there any problems in the economy at all. We have problems because Democrats\Liberals and people like you who think like liberals, who think that the solution to every imaginary problem is more government and more government money.
President Reagan said Government is the problem not the solution. And no truer state has ever been said Democrats should read Milton Friedman's book "Free to Choose" to get a clue as to how the economy and monetary system work. Are your ideas representative of what conservatives think now? I don't think so. I guess I'm conservative in that I'm for border control, strong military , and for law enforcement and against abortion. But i"m also a libertarian for gun rights, for freedom of speech, for liberty, for property rights, and for a very limited government and limited laws that protect property rights but don't have anything to do with managing the economy. I am for separation of state and economy.
Who ever came up with the lamebrain idea that government should be allowed near the economy or to control private businesses, anyway ? Oh yeah, a guy named Karl Marx. I really hate that guy and his followers the Democrats for what they are doing to America and the world.
I just saw this thread, and you beat me to the reply! I heard Glenn Beck say this on his show today, and I wanted to scream. I’ve been pointing out the Tax Foundation numbers on Alaska for a long time now. Glad someone else caught it, too.
Maybe Alaska, that greedy oil-rich Alaska should bail California out. Well, they are. Alaskans are sending their money to Washington and Washington is sending it to California!
He's wrong. Just the opposite has been happening for decades. States like CA have been sending more money to Washington than they receive in return, while Alaska sends less than it receives. So, for decades, states like CA have been sending money to Washington, and Washington has been sending it to Alaska (not the other way around).
California politicians are to blame for putting the state in its current situation. But Alaska was never the independent state everyone seems to believe.
Edison wasn’t the guy you think he was...he actually “invented” very little. His genius was in perfecting the inventions of others. This is nothing to sneeze at, but it isn’t pure science, not even pure technological design.
The agencies you named aren’t in the science business.
And, too, I’m not saying that gubmint is the only entity that can or should do R&D. I am saying, that they have made contributions.
To be honest, I don’t begrudge these states, like Alaska, the federal money. Not only are we all Americans, but to not give them the money would be a hugely disruptive thing. You’d have even depopulation problems in these debtor states. In Kansas, for instance, they’re giving away land to people who want to live there and can prove they can make a living. Imagine that multiplied by a thousand.
Are you looking for a job?
Note: This thread is updated on a regular basis.
I’d be curious to see those numbers without military spending.
Libs always trot out those figures because many conservative-leaning states have lots of military bases. They don’t talk about HI, which, like AK, is a small (population) state with a large military component that skews the numbers.
If Alaska declares independence, it will be annexed by RUssia.
It’s a hornets’ nest to start factoring in military numbers. You have to assume that the vast majority of those bases are of importance, just as you need to assume that a transportation infrastructure of roads is of importance.
Do you really want to get into a discussion of what military expenditures are justified and which are not? It’s not a road I’d like to go down.
...also, many of those states are absolutely dependent on military spending. If the military were to pack up and move out, the shortfall would have to be made up from somewhere else —
That’s a pretty specious argument. You could say the same about any Federal dollars.
