Waffles and Grits a White House Favorite, First Lady Says
Foxnews.com ^ | 2/23/09 | Lee Ross

The guests at Sunday evening's black tie White House dinner for the nation's governors feasted on servings of Chesapeake crab agnolottis, wagyu beef, Nantucket scallops and huckleberry cobbler for dessert. But thanks to First Lady Michelle Obama, a bit more of the day-to-day eating habits of the new family living at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave has been learned.

"There are some mean waffles and grits that are made in the morning that have become a regular staple for some of us," Obama said. But she didn't reveal exactly for who that breakfast pairing has become a morning favorite. Though she was quick to add that she's not the one who eats waffles every day

Wagyu beef?

Extensive fat marbling in slices of high-grade wagyu beef served at a restaurant in Kobe, Japan.

Wagyu refers to several breeds of cattle genetically predisposed to intense marbling and to producing a high percentage of oleaginous unsaturated fat.

The meat from wagyu cattle is known worldwide for its marbling characteristics, increased eating quality through a naturally enhanced flavor, tenderness and juiciness, and thus a high market value.

Several areas in Japan are famous for the quality of their Wagyu cattle, and ship beef bearing their areas' names.

Some examples are Kobe, Mishima and Ohmi beef. The wagyu cattle's genetic predisposition yields a beef that contains a higher percentage of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids[1] than typical beef.

The increased marbling also improves the ratio of monounsaturated fats to saturated fats.

The woman who orders room service lobster and champagne at a fancy hotel eats waffles and grits?

You can't like both? I prefer crab to lobster myself, but that doesn't mean that I don't love Waffle House.

I like waffles...and I like grits..but mixed with oatmeal (keeps it from getting lumpy).

I am sorry/embarrassed for some of the responses in this thread, this article wasn’t a bad one. The wagyu steak is something that is on the menu a lot, is that like Kobe beef?

Fresh produce is often brought in from the surrounding area ... Gardens are ready for harvest already in Virginia and Maryland? Isn't that a little early?

From iowahawk's iodiossey
Here he met Victimia, a long and lanky beauty, whose siren songs of woe bewitched;

They were wed in the screaming gardens of Jeremiad. "O Victimia," he sang, "if I could but bottle thy sob stories, the world would be ours."

"Yes, Obamacles beloved," replied she, "but first let me help you conquer Chicago."

The monsters of Chicago were helpless against the duet's laments and dirges; Like a moth to a flame they proved irresistible, and the strange mutant beasts of this Isle of the Damned soon were transfixed by their enchantments:

But, but they don't eat grits in Kenya do they?

The just toss a waterbuffalo on the fire and feed the townsfolk.

Hitlery better be careful as they might mistake her for this animal.

If they are waffles, then they are probably for the kids. My nieces and nephews love those things.

Personally, I prefer steak and eggs for breakfast....

There's an earlier post that describes kobe/wangyu beef well. I'm certainly no expert.

I had hoped that FReepers would avoid the racial stereotype... sigh...I was just funnin' about the food!
