Stand up to federal government
Gotta admire his sentiments though.Lately I've heard a great many people wondering what we can do beyond calling our elected representatives in Washington, D.C., to save our nation from a slide into socialism and to restore common sense. I've been thinking, though, that maybe we've been calling the wrong people. Maybe we should be calling and meeting with people a little closer to home.
In all 50 states, our elected state representatives have abdicated their responsibilities to us, and have stood by silently while letting the federal government bully them and bribe them with our federal tax dollars.
The Tenth Amendment to the Constitution reads, "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
The powers and responsibilities of Congress are laid out in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution, and they are limited. Similarly, Article 2, Section 2 of the Constitution spells out the limited powers of the president.
Congress and the president need a very firm reminder of these limitations. They've shown themselves to be far too disconnected from the public and from reality, and too addicted to the powers they have given themselves. That's why we need to press our state officials into standing up for us, and standing up to the federal government.
Now contact them and tell them to start doing their jobs.

For small-government die-hards, the $787 billion economic stimulus bill recently passed by Congress isn't a life saver. It's the last straw.
Lawmakers across the country are sponsoring resolutions — most of them only symbolic — asserting state sovereignty, in effect the right to ignore any federal law or policies they deem unconstitutional, including the stimulus bill, the No Child Left Behind Act and any new assault rifle ban. (snip) "This has been a progression from (the New Deal) days to today, with the only break being Ronald Reagan," South Carolina state Rep. Michael Pitts said by e-mail. Pitts, a Republican, has a resolution pending in the South Carolina House. "The stimulus bill is simply propellant for the resistance."

The liberal press, including the most influential writers on the op-ed pages of The New York Times, hated the Palins the moment they saw them. They viciously attacked even one of their daughters who was pregnant and unmarried. In a coordinated attack, trashy caricatures of Palin appeared regularly from Tiny Fey and the “Saturday Night Live” crew all during the campaign. Mainstream newscasters like Katie Couric went out of their way to publicly embarrass her by asking her if she ever read the newspaper.

Virginia at last is considering asserting her rights under the 10th Amendment to the Constitution. In doing so, we join the majority of states that has felt it necessary to take back the powers currently being usurped by the federal government. The government's favorite tactic of expanding power by creating constituencies dependent on federal largess is evident on every slimy page of the stimulus bill. The ultimate goal is behavior control, where the feds impose California values on God-fearing Virginians.
The bill is an example of the concept of “stimulus control.” A subject can be forced to react a certain way, given the proper pleasant, or very unpleasant, behavior reinforcement. The stimulus bill is thus aptly named. They dangle money in front of cash-starved states, forcing them to accept provisions that clash with state law. Want road money? You have to use union labor, even in a right-to-work state. Want unemployment help? You can’t force people ever to go back to work. School renovation funding? Make sure the schools are never used by those horrible religious groups, which I assume includes Girl Scouts. States are forced to support propositions and philosophies their voters have rejected.
Chronic dependence wreaks psychological devastation, and is anathema to the pursuit of happiness. The stimulus includes $250 billion in expanded welfare payments, virtually assuring that yet another generation will be lost to the seductive support of the welfare state. We turned our backs on this as a nation in 1996, with the GOP congress’ welfare reform. Virginians benefitted. Most families, 85%, stayed off welfare and reduced their need for food stamps and other assistance. Most, 83%, had health coverage for their children within 18 months of leaving welfare. Their incomes rose steadily, our economy benefitted, and those forced off handouts benefitted. More families stayed together, single mothers put off having children. Removing welfare-to-work is the ticket to impoverishing Virginia by increasing our dependent class, luring them to the dole with Medicaid, free lunches, food stamps, and free government cheese. No, really; there is $50 million for surplus cheese in the stimulus.
It doesn’t begin or end with the stimulus. The Freedom of Choice Act, FOCA, will rip out all state-decided restrictions on abortion. How dare they. There is nothing more tyrannical than the government confiscating taxes under threat of imprisonment, only to use the money for morally reprehensible purposes in opposition to the voters’ wishes. HR45, Blair Holt's Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009, will make gun ownership so burdensome as to be a de facto ban. Virginia hunts, and Virginia will defend herself.
What right do Obama, Pelosi, and Reid have to ax Virginia’s successes in fighting poverty, in refusing unions, in supporting religious groups’ good works? To force us to support what we have rejected in the polling booth?
Virginia’s motto is “Thus always to tyrants.” It should be the title of this bill.

Tenth Amendment Movement Taking Off

In less than two months, an exciting new movement has captured the imagination of freedom-minded Americans all across our nation. This movement, often referred to as the “State Sovereignty Movement,” is more properly referred to as the “Tenth Amendment Movement,” because it is not a movement to affirm the absolute freedom and independence of each state, but instead a movement to restore the balance of power between the states and the federal government within the union in accordance with the Tenth Amendment of the Constitution.
Resolutions to restore the balance of power between the states and the federal government have already been introduced in at least 14 state legislatures. Most of them are almost identical to the resolution already passed in the Oklahoma House. After a series of “whereas” clauses, nearly all of them contain a key section stating:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND THE SENATE OF THE __________ LEGISLATURE: THAT the State of __________ hereby claims sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States over all powers not otherwise enumerated and granted to the federal government by the Constitution of the United States.
Besides the 14 states that have already introduced Tenth Amendment resolutions, many more are currently considering introducing such resolutions. The very rapid growth of this Tenth Amendment Movement is being propelled by the very widespread dismay and disgust over the multiple trillion-dollar bailouts, the nationalization of banks and other corporations, the accelerated creation of money out of thin air by the Federal Reserve, and the continued buildup of power within the federal government at the expense of the states and the people.

Many conservatives, myself included, have backed away from the political fray since November 4, 2008. Each of us has his or her own reasons for doing so, but I suspect that those reasons fall into two broad categories for most:
(1) A sense of hopelessness and futility, even as regards the pen and the ballot box, to make a difference in the direction in which our republic is being steamrolled. Rampant ignorance and apathy brought us to the brink, and evil men in leadership positions are gleefully providing the final push.
(2) Where to begin even attempting to bring about activist solutions anymore? We daily awaken to new and incomprehensible affronts to our intellect and our sense of belonging. We are beginning to feel like strangers in a strange land. I have no use for my fellow Americans who voted for ‘change’ that was beautifully gift wrapped, but about whose contents they knew nothing. Nor do I anymore quite understand those well-meaning patriots who are chanting ‘Sarah in 2012!’ and the like. I suspect that they believe they can still work within a system whose foundations have putrefied, and whose rule-makers are corrupt to the bone.

The current American system of government, the one created by our Constitution, was formed out of thirteen sovereign states. Among all the myriad threats to our liberty, the disintegration of the independent rights of state governments is, in many ways, the most dangerous threat.
"States' rights" has gotten a bad name. This vital principle of American government has been linked to Dixiecrat racism and thug rule by local bosses. The reality is very different. States are the best agents for protecting the rights of minorities. The mashing of states into lifeless appendages of the federal government poses dangers for freedom and for the rights of the oppressed.
Mormons were hounded across our nation until they settled in Utah and the Rocky Mountain region. Once safe, Mormons became patriotic and productive Americans. Their faith was protected by a powerful local political influence. People who admired the values of Mormons could live happily in Utah; those who wanted a different lifestyle could live anywhere else.
Jews and Catholics left Europe to escape persecution. They found sanctuary in America, but more specifically Jews and Catholics found governments sympathetic to their culture, faith, and interests in the industrial, urbanized North. Jews, Irish, and Italians established their own version of America in those cities and states.
