I know President Obama is not Muslim, but I am tempted nevertheless to think that he is, as are most Muslims I know. In a very unscientific oral poll, ranging from family members to Muslim acquaintances, many of us feel, just as African-Americans did for the non-black but culturally leaning African-American President Bill Clinton, that we have our first American Muslim president in Barack Hussein Obama.

Barack Obama received at least some instruction in the Islamic faith of his father and went with him to the mosque, but the importance of this experience is vastly overstated by conservative commentators who seek to portray Obama as a Muslim of sorts. Radical anti-Americanism, rather than Islam, was the reigning faith in the Dunham household. ...

Barack Obama is a clever fellow who imbibed hatred of America with his mother's milk, but worked his way up the elite ladder of education and career. He shares the resentment of Muslims against the encroachment of American culture, although not their religion. He has the empathetic skill set of an anthropologist who lives with his subjects, learns their language, and elicits their hopes and fears while remaining at emotional distance. That is, he is the political equivalent of a sociopath. The difference is that he is practicing not on a primitive tribe but on the population of the United States.

There is nothing mysterious about Obama's methods. "A demagogue tries to sound as stupid as his audience so that they will think they are as clever as he is," wrote Karl Krauss. Americans are the world's biggest suckers, and laugh at this weakness in their popular culture. Listening to Obama speak, Sinclair Lewis' cynical tent-revivalist Elmer Gantry comes to mind, or, even better, Tyrone Power's portrayal of a carnival mentalist in the 1947 film noire Nightmare Alley. The latter is available for instant viewing at Netflix, and highly recommended as an antidote to having felt uplifted by an Obama speech. ..."

Love the article. And yes, He is my Muslim President, too. He, President Obama, dosent have to “say” he is Muslim, his actions “say” he is Muslim. Muslim “means one who submits his will to God”. His actions speak volumes that he follows the Holy scriptures. Also, too, Allah SWT, sent down the Gospel & Torah. Obama, too, is following those scriptures as well, because they all are confirmations of the Holy Quran, the final Holy Book God sent. So if you read all of them then you can “see” the broad spectrum and know that he, President Obama, is being a Muslim...submitting his will to God’s will. He is a rightous man. Not perfect, but rightous. His very name means “Blessing” (BARACK) Yes, he is MY Muslim president, too. I believe God has sent him to do a job. No, he is not a prophet, but a servant of God.”

Not sure why you don’t think he’s a muslim . . . he was born a muslim, raised a muslim, went to muslim schools, has a muslim name, and only became a Christian when he found a church that would spit on America and all it stands for.

And don’t forget his “57-state” gaff during the campaign . . . there are 57 muslim states (just google ‘57 states’ and see what comes up) . . . he being a true Christian God-hatin muslim. It’s amazing that we put this illegal alien in the White House.

So when Obama says he's not Muslim, my umma mentality says I know better.

Obamists all see in Obama what they want to see. That is the one thing that has been remarkable about him; people read into him what they want to. They are convinced he agrees with them even when he has stated an opposing opinion; they are always sure that he secretly agrees with them, that he says what he needs to for political reasons but he really agrees with them. And it doesn't bother them in the least that they are sure he says one thing while believing another.

A buddy of mine, an Obamaniac, asked me why I was against him. I listed his stated positions that I disagreed with. His response? "He's not really going to do that", he said. But he says he will, I say. "But he won't. You and I both know he won't". So why do you support him if you know he's lying? "I know he wants to do those things, which is why I support him. But I know he can't really do those things, so you shouldn't worry about it". Astonishing.

We’re told over and over again that he is not muslim, but we don’t KNOW it. Frankly, I think the jury is still out.

The Qur’an speaks often of the umma, or the worldwide community of Muslims. In the early days of Islam, the Prophet Muhammad led the small umma. Every decision, every effort, everything was for the umma—people who were often unrelated by blood but had become related by choice as Muslims. In those early days, many Muslims had gone against the wishes of their own families in converting to Islam, pitting brother against sister, father against child. Perhaps that's why the concept of umma became so dear and is still echoed today—in my opinion, echoed more than that Western favorite jihad—in Muslim homes, whether those homes are in the United States or in Palestine.

Perhaps it is my—and most Muslims’— loyalty to the umma that is behind our insistence on seeing Obama as Muslim. Islam survived and continues to survive because Muslims believe we have to respect and take care of each other, as members of the umma. If we were to start excluding members, or revising our broad guidelines for admittance, the very essence of the community feeling that is important in Islam, that gives me and other Muslims comfort everyday, would be undercut. So when Obama says he's not Muslim, my umma mentality says I know better. Once you have a Muslim parent, especially a dad, you're in. Whether you like it or not, Muslims all over the world see you as one of them.

Well, Ms. that's exactly why you can never REALLY be an American and no American should consider Muslims as really Americans.

You see, in America, Americans have always considered THEMSELVES part of a "special community". We call it AMERICA. Regardless of race or religion, we always consider ourselves from a political perspective Americans first. Sure, there are a few wackos out there who think diferently, but those opinions are not generally required by any other political segment of our society - except, of course, Muslims.

Most Americans still don't understand you and people who think like you. They still try to equate Islam with Buddhism, Sikhism, Christianity, or any other religion. Unlike you, they fail to understand that Islam is not just a religion. It is a social system, a political system, an economic system, and a nation. But they will learn.

I just hope they don't learn too late.

AND, by the way, JIHAD is not a favorite WESTERN word. Its a favorite ISLAMIC word.

Amazing that so many here still don't get what Obama's about. The guy is a Marxist! His "Change" movement is about Marxist takeover, not a U.S. conversion to Islam. The "church" Obama found and remained loyal to for twenty friggin years preaches "Black Liberation". BLT is a revolutionary communist political ideology. He's been surrounded and groomed by communists his whole entire life.

Congratulations on an extraordinary history making election!

We can think back with pride to decades of hard work toward our strategic goal of a big enough, broad enough and united enough labor and all-people’s movement that could overcome the ultra-right blockage to all progress. That all people’s movement has come to life, it is dynamic and it has the potential to keep growing.

The election of Barack Obama and a strengthened Congress creates new conditions in our country. There is now the possibility to shift gears and move forward. This new day requires us to further develop our tactics in order to continue to deepen and broaden labor and people’s unity.
