Missouri Republican leaders resistant to unemployment stimulus money
The Kansas City Star ^ | February 25, 2009 | David A. Lieb

Republican legislative leaders said Wednesday that they are willing to turn down $133 million in federal stimulus money rather than change Missouri's law on jobless benefits.

Unemployed Missourians already are to receive a $25 weekly boost in benefits as a result of the federal stimulus law. That won't be affected.

But Republicans say they don't like a second prong that would require Missouri to expand unemployment benefits to receive additional federal money. They fear businesses would shoulder a higher tax burden to continue the expanded benefits when the federal money runs out.

"This is essentially a federal bribe to change state laws permanently, and the bribe lasts two years or less," said Republican Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder. He was joined at a news conference by House Speaker Ron Richard, R-Joplin, Senate President Pro Tem Charlie Shields, R-St. Joseph, and other Republican lawmakers.

Maybe these Missouri Republicans will do us proud and take control of this issue away from Mr. Nixon who wants to spend like a drunken sailor on shore leave after a year at sea.

I suggest you read the fine article. It explains the
changes Zero wants for their bribe.

Turn it down MO, I say as a MO resident. Nixon can’t make
you change the laws, be responsible and pave the way, just
say NO!

Smart move, MO Republicans. Would that KS Republicans will stand as tall. In the recent past, KS Republicans split over such liberal issues, many in the Senate siding with their liberal democRAT friends!!!

small businesses are the heart of the economy. Not part of the dictator’s plans. He wants to own the businesses and tell you how to run them and what you get paid. I am so sick of people calling him a Socialist. At least O’Reilly had the guts to call him a damn Communist on The Vuew.

Good for them. Texas has also indicated that they will turn this money down. The Democrat plot to expand govt is getting exposed in the process.

"This is essentially a federal bribe to change state laws permanently, and the bribe lasts two years or less," ...well duh - all this stimulus stuff is designed to expand federal programs in as many areas as possible, and once expanded they'll never shrink - the ads for those attempting to bring such programs back to managable dimensions in the future are already written - "Republicnas want to starve children", "Republicans want to take your Social Security away", "Republicans try to ruin family farms" - I can hear them now......

I live across the state line from Johnson County. I know a few people who are left over there. It used to be a strong Republican area but somehow they’ve elected Dennis Moore twice now and I can’t figure out why for the life of me.

I will wish that some Conservative Kansans stiffen their resolve.

I think the more people read this monstrosity, the more it is exposed and people just plain don’t want it.

I'm one of those "people left over there" and as strong a conservative Republican as they come. Moore has used the liberal "Falling Star," OP Sun and other media to perpetuate his myth of being a "moderate." The local TV and radio news casts all lead with whatever is written in the Star, which now that McClatchey owns it, is even more left wing than before, if that is possible.

With all of that free advertisement, Moore has never, ever needed a bundle to continue to get re-elected.

In Johnson County being a Moderate means that you are "reasonable" and not "extreme."

Even Moore's predecessor, Jan Meyers, was a "Moderate" RINO. She claimed to be a "fiscal conservative" yet never passed up a chance to go across party lines and vote for a tax increase. She was and still is, as "Moderate" as Teddy Kennedy!
