O.C. churches struggle to weather economic woes [Orange County, CA]
The Orange County Register ^ | February 27, 2009 | DEEPA BHARATH AND SARAH TULLY

When Capistrano Valley Church saw its donations dwindling over the last year, the church's pastor Heather Clark took some drastic steps.

First, she asked the landlord for a 20 percent rent reduction and got it. Secondly, the church's staff took a 10 percent pay cut. They switched from newsletters and paper bulletins to e-mail communication.

The church, which recently changed its name to Center for Spiritual Living, is not alone in its battle for survival. Clark said the 425-strong church experienced a 20 percent decline in donations over the last year. That is more or less consistent with most Orange County houses of worship caught in the economic downturn that continues to affect everyone from individuals and small business to major corporations and megachurches.

...

The credit union has outstanding loans of about $3.2 billion that include about 1,000 churches nationwide. La Tour said the credit union used to grant loans for major construction projects, but funding sources have dried up so the credit union is mostly only funding critical needs.

...

Saddleback Church in Lake Forest is also watching its spending and scaling down international missions, said David Chrzan, chief of staff.

"We're actually seeing more people come to church because people's faith gets stronger when times get tough," he said.

The church collected about seven tons of food during a food drive last week when Pastor Rick Warren encouraged his 24,000-strong congregation to give during this time of need, Chrzan said.

Saddleback Church's free money management classes are attended by thousands, some coming from as far as Los Angeles, Chrzan said.

"People are looking for help, resources and spiritual guidance," he said. "A lot of people are also helping each other out."

The article addresses the effect of the downturn on not just worship services, but also on other religion based services such as food banks. No doubt this is happening in many states around the country.

On a side note this to me seems to be a spirutal country club and not a church where the Gospel is preached

http://www.cslcv.org/about.shtml
* There is one power, one intelligence, in the universe. We call this power God.
* God is the source of all creation, nothing exists outside of God.
* Every person is a divine creation of God.
* Divine nature is our inheritance, all qualities of God exist within each of us.
* God is wholeness, we experience this wholeness as psychological, physical and relational wellness.
* All humanity is part of the divine and as such is one.
* Our thoughts create our experience.
* We are at choice in every moment.
* Through prayer treatment and affirmation we bring about changes in our experience.
* As we awake to the qualities of God within us, the world awakens.

I don’t think those receiving food and comfort would agree, but to each his own. :-)

It was amazing to see these pols up there, patting selves on the back for kicking many more Californians out of their houses. On the other hand, we have the politicians we voted for....

I try to not whine about elected officals, but rather the voters who put them in office, again, and again, and again...

She has crazy eyes. Crazy smile too. The kind of look you see when you wake up covered in gasoline and hear a match strike.

He looks like a used car salesman.

Templo Calvario in Santa Ana laid off six of its 35 employees, closed its 25-year-old food bank and cut back on its contributions to missions because of dwindling funds in the midst of a major construction project ....The church needs the money to keep up with payments on a $9 million loan for a new sanctuary......

Seems to me I read somewhere that the borrower is a servant to the lender. Looks like that's still true today.

mistaking a comment that giving food and comfort is *not* the path to salvation via the gospel and saying that doing such things are not something a Christian should do should be pretty hard to do... oh well looks like you managed to do it..

“All our righteous acts are like filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6)”

Ill take the Bible over Warren..
