Obama may use 50-vote tactic on energy, healthcare
The Hill ^ | 3/1/09 | Jim Snyder

Posted on 03/01/2009 10:30:40 AM PST by Nachum

President Obama’s budget director said the White House would consider using a Senate procedural tactic so that only 50 votes would be rquired to pass major healthcare and energy reforms.

Peter Orszag, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, said the administration would prefer not to use the budget reconciliation process to push through its package. But he added: "We have to keep everything on the table. We want to get these.... important things done this year." Orszag called healthcare in particular "the key to our fiscal future."

That photo is MUSSOLINI's famous pose.

Fascism will be here very soon, so the 'look' is appropriate!

Gee, the Republicans should ask to use the old “power sharing agreement” dems used when they in the minority. Do you remember this? The stupid republicans agreed and it effectively dissolved their majority status? I wonder how loud the dems would laugh if Boehner would today suggest such an agreement.

High Hopes, but if enough people called their reps, Sit on their door steps, and just plan make it known they are not with the “Hope and Change” O see’s there could be a possibility of several dem senators hold back It will be one large stretch because the political pressure from inside Washington will be great on the dem senators.

Never The Less if 51 senators voted against it we would win, at least until it came up again under different clothing.

School yard bullies typically get stomped harder in the end. We just need someone to do it.

Tie in the senate = VP casts the tie-breaking vote. Of course, seeing what a stupid human being Biden has proved himself to be every time he opens his mouth, Obammie the Commie may not be sure he has his vote locked up (Biden could check off the wrong box by accident).

If any rule in Congress is investigated, there’s usually another rule to block it. GOP need to sift through details.

With Joe Biden being able to break a 50-50 tie, that could work out...he might vote the wrong way out of confusion.

Isn’t a majority required, ie. 51 votes in a 100-person body? Or does he have to cheat at every opportunity? Why does the Senate have a rule like that?

If there's a 50/50 tie, the vice president gets to cast the deciding vote.

Rahm Emanuel: “Our goal, Bob, is to continue to reach out and it’s our desire that the Republicans would work with us and try to be constructive, rather than adopt the philosophy of somebody like Rush Limbaugh.”

He is a liar!!!

Socialists think that bipartisan cooperations means that they propose something and the conservatives just blindly agree to support it.
Boy are they wrong.
I haven’t seen anything from the Liberals, Democrats or other Socialists that I would support.

why didn’t republicans do this. they always let dems beat them procedurally.
they let dems hold up bush appts. even when repubs ere in charge.
why don’t we ever figure things out? republicans can’t control things when
they are in majority and can’t obstruct when in minority and now, we’ve
got two clowns on the news shows agreeing with dems about rush!
i hate these guys.

They only need 50 votes, since the VP is a Democrat and would cast the deciding vote in case of a tie.

It is against Senate rules to filibuster a budget reconciliation bill. Otherwise, government operations could be shutdown. Thus, it is not uncommon to attach controversial legislation to a budget reconciliation bill.

The Republicans did exactly that with their own Energy Bill -- one that would've opened ANWR -- in 2004 (I think). But they lost 49-51 when several key Republicans defected (McCain among them, as I recall).
