U.S. Says Threat of Mexican Drug Cartels Approaching 'Crisis Proportions'
FOX News ^ | March 03, 2009

Two of Mexico's deadliest drug cartels have reached a combined force of 100,000 foot soldiers, wreaking havoc across the country and threatening U.S. border states, the U.S. Defense Department told The Washington Times.

The cartels rival the Mexican army in size and have both Mexico and the U.S. in crisis mode as they deal with what they fear is a coming insurgency along the border.

"It's moving to crisis proportions," an unidentified defense official told The Times. The official also said the cartels have reached a size where they are on par with Mexico's army of 130,000.

About 7,000 people have died in the last year — more than 1,000 in January alone — at the hands of Mexico's increasingly violent drug cartels. Murders often involve beheadings or bodies dissolved in vats of acid.

The two most dangerous cartels are the Sinaloa cartel, nicknamed the "Federation" or "Golden Triangle" by law enforcement agencies, and "Los Zetas" (the Gulf Cartel). They have been growing and are reportedly discussing a truce or merger to better withstand government forces, The Times reported.

Mexico is now only behind Pakistan and Iran as a U.S. national security concern, coming in ahead of Afghanistan and Iraq, the defense official told The Times.

The country's attorney general, Eduardo Medina Mora, called last week for more U.S. prosecutions of people who sell weapons illegally to the cartels, as well as more efforts to stop drug profits from flowing south.

Mexico has spent $6.5 billion over the last two years, on top of its normal public security budget, on the fight against drugs, but that falls short of the $10 billion Mexican drug gangs bring in annually, he said.

When, oh when, will our PRE_ _ SENT step in and CHANGE this? I have high HOPE that he will, soon.

Seriously, we should be moving troops to our border.

How about protecting the border, building effing fence and deport illegals. This is why we have the military and national guard.

This was the lead story in the Washington Times today. Very alarming. Good thing we have that fence and all those troops on the border.

And still there is no wall and no American troops defending our border. That is the main function of the federal government and while they spend $$ (both real and nonexistent) on everything imaginable, our citizens at the border are unprotected. That is unconscionable.

...laying the ground work for the coming race war in America....if you called out the national guard, the hispanic troops could go over or go home....and take their weapons with them.

Worse, it’s preventable.

I have the same questions. What is our government doing about it. Maybe we should just put them all in 18 wheelers and deliver them to the White House.

Unfortunately not only Obama, but Bush was very weak in dealing with Mexico.

To truly stop this crisis....the US needs to:

- Seal and secure the border...no one enters the US unless they are US citizens....no one leaves unless they are Mexican...also prevents the gun shipments claimed by Mexico

- Abrogate NAFTA, as pertains to Mexico....seems the only thing being traded with Mexico now are drugs. The treaty is now a threat to our national security.

- Move all illegal alien drug dealer prisoners to one or two exclusive US facilities....near the border. Keep them away from the general prison population.

- Put US military on the border. Allow them to fire on anyone who approaches 100 yards of the US border

- Any Mexican cartel drug dealer caught on US soil will be held as an enemy combatant...given a summary military trail...and punished immediately (including capital punishment)

Its time to stop coddling the anti-American pro-illegal pro-Mexico element. They are threat to national security.

Anything short of these measures taken are tantamount to treason

“Seriously, we should be moving troops to our border.”

AMEN!!!!!!!

We need to militarize the border NOW! If/when the Mexican government collapses, we have to prevent millions of additional people from flooding across the border into California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and beyond.

Well, by all means, lets just sit and watch it happen. We have plenty of time until it's out of control. Zero is too busy enjoying the White House with parties and concerts, riding around in AirForce One and tanking the economy to be bothered with these kind of problems.

John McCain has a better idea--make 'em all US citizens and let them pick lettuce for $50/hour.

Do I have to say it again?
Annex Mexico, send in the Army and restore order while we set up a territorial government.
Winfield Scott siezed New Mexico and California in the 1800s. It’s time to take the rest and turn it into something morthwhile.

No, he is instead thinking of limiting our second amendment rights in response to this problem — which seems perfectly logical and appropriate when you’re a Communist.

“The country’s attorney general, Eduardo Medina Mora, called last week for more U.S. prosecutions of people who sell weapons illegally to the cartels....”

Yeah, that’s right, blame American gun owners for the acquisition of automatic weapons and RPGs. Putzhead!

This is corrupt Mexican Army personnel making lots of pesos for selling equipment that belongs to their Army.

We should solve the problem by building a huge wall across the entire border, putting up a guard tower every mile along its length and putting in a quad .50 mount and 50,000 rounds of linked ammo. Back that up with fast, mobile reserves of men and armored vehicles, along with a few dozen Apaches. Build the wall, towers, guns, ammo, armored vehicles and Apaches from scratch, with American workers. That’ll make us safer and richer, both.

Which is why Clueless Leader won’t do it - it makes too much sense.

I’m thinking that Obama will continue sending our military to foreign countries and then use whatever large-scale emergencies that occur in this country as an excuse to establish his brownshirt forces.

It sounds like it’s coming to the point that a fence won’t protect us. We cannot have a Somalia on our southern border. Such a scenario does no good for us or for the people of Mexico. If the Mexican Army cannot maintain control, then another army is going to have to step in to help- ours, Canada’s, or both.
