Church shooting suspect has mental illness from Lyme disease By Joel Currier, Jeremy Kohler and Nicholas J.C. Pistor ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH 03/09/2009 MARYVILLE — A man suspected of killing the Rev. Fred Winters during a church service in Maryville on Sunday morning had developed mental illness from a tick bite, his family has said. Police did not release the name of the suspect, who was seriously injured in a struggle with members of the congregation after the shooting of Winters at the First Baptist Church. But a source close to the case confirmed late Sunday that it is Terry Joe Sedlacek, 27, who was the subject of a Post-Dispatch story in August about how Lyme disease had attacked his brain.

A friend of mine had the same problem, except he didn't know he had Lyme until it had secured an excellent foothold. The doctors kept telling him it was (a) in his head, or (b) arthritis. Unfortunately, to get effective treatment for Lyme, it must be treated early, very early.

He was an excellent finish carpenter, but had to give it up because his hands swelled so badly he couldn't hold his tools. Here in Texas, it's out there, but not endemic. However, our doctors have finally gotten to the point that a tick bite gets an automatic Lyme test now.

"However, our doctors have finally gotten to the point that a tick bite gets an automatic Lyme test now."

Good, but the notion that only ticks transmit the disease is an urban legend.

IMHO, a blood test for Lyme should be part of the routine annual checkup roster, along with cholesterol, HIV or whatever else is part of the routine annual checkup roster nowadays. It may not be endemic to certain areas, but people travel and move around, so that matters less than it would in an agrarian age-- I'm an example of that, having picked up the bug nine time zones from home. And anytime there's a bulls-eye reaction surrounding an insect bite, a two-month course of doxycycline should be started immediately, no waiting for tests.

The Senior Pastor of our SBC church just passed his CCW course this past Saturday will start packing as soon as the state processes his paperwork. Don’t know if he’ll be packing while in the pulpit, but I suggested to him yesterday that we get him fitted for body armor.

Shoot, I had been betting the perp was a gay Muslim illegal immigrant terrorist liberal who hates Christians. Turns out it’s just another friendly neighborhood deranged guy — just like in all the most recent church shootings.

LOL! So true. Every time there's a story like this within the first ten posts someone chimes in that it's probably Islamic terrorism --despite the fact that since 9/11, Muslim on non-Muslim violence in the United States has been practically nonexistent. You can almost sense the disappointment when the perp's name turns out to not be "Mohammad Rodriguez."

Skits like that could be lethal, all they’d need is a few marines in the congregation . . .

I remember reading years ago about a preacher who shot himself in the head during a skit. The gun was loaded with blanks, but a piece of the casing came loose and was shot into his skull just like a bullet would have.

LOL! Jerry Springer. It is sad but some of the churches feel they have to this sort of entertainment to attract the faithful.

The other thing is evangelicals and other denominations turning services into rock concerts. Often they are loser rock star wannabes.

I am not Christian bashing as I am one but some of this cheezy praise rock music is junk. This is particularly depressing when Catholic and Protestant denominations have such incredible music written for church services including Bach, Handel, Mozart plus Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Pergolesi, Albanoni, etc etc.

Mozart’s Requeim is just staggering. The female choral parts beseeching the lord to show mercy on their departed souls and sounding like angels as they sing. The male choir singing about fire and damnation. Pure genius.

I was trying to figure out what ticks and show tunes about “when your a Jet your a Jet all the way” or “Officer Krupke” had to do with each other. ;-)

West Side Story was really about the problems of illegal immigration but the libs turned that one around.

Anyone remember IBM CEO Louis Gerstner. He was the CEO before the current one. He had been the head of Philip Morris before that.

His brother had been a top guy at IBM before Louis went there. The brother was moving up until he got very sick. He had Lyme disease and they had a hard time diagnosing it. This occured back in the early 1990s I think.

Mosquitoes, the carriers of Lyme disease, malaria and West Nile Virus, are most effectively controlled and the incidence rate among humans dramatically lowered by DDT. The environmentalists banned DDT in the early 1970s for political reasons only (no damage to animals ever shown or was minuscule). Thus, they condemned many humans to these debilitating diseases.

Radical environmentalists and the policies they spawn have killed, are killing and will kill (John 10:10a) because their ideology worships the creation rather than the creator (Romans Chapter 1).

I attend an Evangelical church (Calvary Chapel) and we have NEVER had anything close to a skit in church, much less a “surprise” one. I cannot imagine my pastor even doing something like that.

As far as “gang” movies go, I much prefer “The Cross and the Switchblade”. True story about the guy who founded Teen Challenge Ministries and a gangster (Nicky Cruz) who wanted to kill him. Pat Boone and a young Erik Estrada.

I had lyme about 10 years ago; it came back, and back, and back. Actually was bitten about 14 years ago, got sick. Was re-bitten 10 years ago, got really sick. It went into my central nervous system. I had to take a LOT of docy for more than two months and when I would relapse: more. Finally after several years I got better! Still have occasional arthritis, but NOTHING like I had. Yes, it can affect your temperment drastically. V’s wife.

Skeeters don’t carry the Lyme...it’s the ticks that do. Baby ticks that live on mice. V’s wife.

I never had Lyme disease, but I did spend a couple days in the hospital because of someone who did. I was on a routine loss of consciousnesscall, and when I exited the building this random guy just attacked me from behind with a baseball bat. Fortunately he went for the back instead of the head. Beat me for about 45 seconds until they could get him off of me. they took him in, and he was having some serious seizures. Docs said he had Lyme Disease, that had caused multiple brain lesions. Don't know what happened to him. Couldn't prosecute him because he was loco. Not one of my best memories, but I now have a lot of respect for Lyme disease.
