Obama May Send National Guard To Mexican Border In Escalating Drug War

President Obama weighed in Wednesday on the escalating drug war on the U.S.-Mexico border, saying that he was looking at possibly deploying National Guard troops to contain the violence but ruled out any immediate military move.

"We're going to examine whether and if National Guard deployments would make sense and under what circumstances they would make sense," Obama said during an interview with journalists for regional papers, including a McClatchy reporter.

"I don't have a particular tipping point in mind," he said. "I think it's unacceptable if you've got drug gangs crossing our borders and killing U.S. citizens."

Already this year there have been 1,000 people killed in Mexico along the border, following 2008's death toll of 5,800, according to federal officials who credit Mexican President Felipe Calderon for a crackdown on drug cartels.

More Mexican troops and police are dying in their drug war than we have casualties in Iraq!

Don't get me wrong, I stand 100% behind Mexico since for once they are trying to get the situation under control. The worst thing we could do is not help them! Even Fox at the end of his presidency began taking some action, even though most of his time was spent pretending the problems away and watching them grow.

But never mind, look the other way, all is OK in Obamaland, where we have undocumented workers and an open boarder. Don't mind the TB, crime, drugs, job loss, burden to our social services (Prisons, schools, hospitals, etc)......... What's 12 million people when you're throwing around trillions?

We are spending 800 billion on bailouts, and weren't able to cough up 2 billion for a boarder fence. That's B.S. but I guess the Hispanic voters are happy. I guess we can't complain when when our boarder towns and even major cities run into issues.

Who says he has to check with you first before ordering the guard to the border? Thanks to bush, he will do as he pleases. An emergency is one if he says it is one.

I’m convinced he doesn’t know what the F he is doing. An earlier article said he will send NO troops to the Mexican Border.

This will come to nothing but increased border crossing and more drug violence.

I live about three hours from the border. Our local newspaper has published articles about the infiltration of gang members into towns south of me and many of the towns are already inhabited by Mexican Drug Cartel gangs.

They have 'safe houses' for transportation of the illegals. The Cartel is moving further and further north and they are ruthless about killing those who oppose them.

Long ago I read that the government didn't want to put the National Guard or Soldiers on the border because they could easily be corrupted by big drug money - as some Border Patrol have..

If Obama federalizes the Guard, the only way he can order them to the border, they will then fall under posse comitatus provisions and will not be able to detain and arrest.

They will end up like before, fixing fences and washing the Border patrol trucks, and posing for Obama photo ops.

?

Posse Commitatus has to do with using the US military (as the US military) to do police work.

Here we have a national border. Certainly appropriate to use the US military to defend the national border.

Still, a federalized NG can just shoot them down like so many animals as they attempt to cross (which is why they'll simply secure and detain invaders).

Negative.

There are serious issues with the federal gov sending troops to anytown USA for what ever crisis du jour

There's a big difference between "Anytown" and the national border.

It can be defended even if it interrupts the flow of cheap whores and cheaper lawnboys to Texas millionaires.

How exactly does the President send the NG? Wouldn’t he send the Army?

I do think placing military on the border is justified and not violating posse comitatus.

Illegals are not US citizens, so the military can legally detain them.
