This, of course, is where most rookie leftists make their fatal error. They believe that working with other leftists will help promote their agenda and give them more power. That strategy didn’t work too well for Trotsky or Rohm and his SA.

Stupid leftists are always surprised when Marxist allies turn on each other and engage in bloodbaths. That was the reaction of leftists worldwide when Hitler invaded Russia in Operation Barborossa.

Balint Vazsonyi in his “America’s 30 Years War” properly explained that he was not surprised in the least that Hitler attacked Stalin, his ally.

They were, he wrote, “the ultimate Marxist competitors.” It’s that simple: leftists compete against each other for power and will crush anyone they perceive as competitors, even allies or friends. Eliminating each other is the norm for Marxists.

The problem there is that belonging to the “correct” team is essential. Leftism in power always comes down to us and them and organizational identity because it is essential that only one organization exist. Until that point is reached it is seen as necessary for all Left orgs to work in the same direction, if not together, even as they are slaughtering each other as in the Spanish Civil War and the Russian Revolution and Civil War. Even within the One Org there is constant knife sharpening and back-stabbing insofar as one individual is not powerful enough and sharp enough to keep it damped down. That does not help he non-Left to cope with the Left and only occasionally leaves openings for the Right to attack even if the Right has any inclination to make that attack or any understanding that it is necessary.

Our socialists will tell us is that there are 57 varieties of socialism, so that dreaded word doesn't really mean anything after all. Well, tell that to 100 million dead people over the 20th century from Stalin to Mao. Tell it to people starving this very day in North Korea. Tell it to the thousands of Cubans who took to rubber rafts to get to this country. Tell it to the UN-ocrats who are enabling Sudanese genocide because Muslims have an alliance with European socialists at the UN.

But Lewis isn't really responding to that argument at all. He's just firing the emotional artillery.

If North Korea is socialist and France is socialist, if Cuba is socialist and Sweden is socialist, what does "socialism" mean?

If Stalin and Erich Honnecker were socialists and Tony Blair and Helmut Schmidt were socialists, is "socialist" really an analytical-descriptive term or just an emotional one?

It is all a matter of degree.

The more socialist the more totalitarian.

The more socialist the less the individual counts and therefore the more easily the individual can be removed for being “disruptive” to the leaders Utopian views.

And the bottom line is a little socialism always leads to a little more socialism to fix the consequences of what was previously applied. Eventually you end up under a dictator that knows what is "best" for you.
