The Mark Sanford Revolution?
The Atlantic ^ | 3/13/09 | Marc Ambinger

The American Conservative, founded by Patrick Buchanan to serve as a voice for anti-war, anti-immigration conservative nationalists, plays an interesting role in conservative politics. Though not as widely read as National Review, which aims to set the tone for the movement conservative mainstream, TAC has gained a devoted following as a sharp critic of the conservative mainstream, a stance reflected in its ardent embrace of Ron Paul's quixotic yet very impressive presidential campaign.

And so Michael Brendan Dougherty's mostly admiring profile of South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford in TAC is worthy of note.

Dougherty does an excellent job of highlighting Sanford's potential appeal to the libertarians and paleoconservatives who backed Paul.

Sanford's conservative credentials compare favorably to anyone else mentioned as a 2012 presidential contender. He calls the public-education system "a Soviet-style monopoly." He promoted school choice through tax rebates to avoid the appearance of government control. He passed a "Castle doctrine" bill that was supported by the NRA. He favors a law-and-order approach to immigration, but opposed REAL ID on civil liberties grounds. Though he avoids showy displays of piety, he is reliably pro-life.

Overall, I think I’m settling on Sanford. There’ve been some rumblings that he’s a “Warmie”, but nothing I’ve found overly convincing yet. My three picks, in order, are Sanford, Jindal, and Palin at this point. Just saw today that unemployment in Jindal’s state went DOWN this past month. Some GOPers must be doing something right....

A Republican who stands on principle! I am pleasantly surprised.

Sanford is looking better for 2012 IMO.

I cannot stand the anti-immigrant crap...

Illegal aliens are not immigrants, they are lawbreakers...

I guess not wanting this nation to continue its path to a 3rd World cesspool is “hard right” then so be it...

I HATE THE MEDIA.

Sanford is a good man. GOP needs more like him FAST.

Ms. Lindsay Grahma-nesty is a dubious woman.

The main thing he has to do as governor is

assert his state’s sovereignty under the 10th amendment.

Illegal aliens are not immigrants, they are lawbreakers...

Exactly.

An immigrant comes to America to become an American.

An illegal alien comes to America because this is where all the good stuff is. He is here as a type of extended commute to work. He works here and sends most of his money back to Mexico.

Do you want absolute proof? Think about the worsening economy.

Where do you go when you lose your job? You go home.

Foreign workers, both legal and illegal, are going home to their native countries as their employment opportunities dry up.

Illegal Mexicans are going home to Mexico.

Where does a real immigrant go? He stays in America, because he is an American! He is no longer Mexican, Indian, Brazilian, Russian or Britain. America is his home now.

A real immigrant lives or dies, eats or starves, succeeds or fails in AMERICA. It is his home and we stand with him. The illegal alien cares nothing for America, but that it should continue to give him good stuff he can't get back home.

Do you have anything definitive to support your comment that Mark Sanford is a RINO, or is it just your opinion? I think he is a man of principle, and I’m proud he is my governor!

Mark Sanford supported John McCain for president in 2000 and 2008.

It has been preached here on this forum for years and to this day that John McCain is a RINO. If Sanford supported John McCain that would show Sanford a RINO ,too.

As a Sarah Palin supporter, I am disappointed that she aligned herself with McLame as well.

That’s too bad about Sanford.

My three picks, in order, are Sanford, Jindal, and Palin at this point.

I would reverse the order based strictly on novelty and electability, but I think any of the three would do a bang-up job.

Sanford also wants obama to succeed as president. I don't because obama is a socialist or worse. I don't want that for my country.

Right now I see no one out there that is presidential material.

He’s probably just avoiding the screaching minions who intentionally distort any statement of wanting 0bama’s agenda to fail into something racist.

One battle at a time.

Sanford wisely stayed neutral in the South Carolina primary. DeMint (the real senator) supported Romney and Graham (the girly senator) supported McCain. You can look it up.

Sanford only supported McCain after he secured the nomination. I think you are mixing him up with Lindsey Graham's evil twin, Charlie Crist, the governor of Florida, who jumped on the McCain bandwagon when it became clear that Romney might have a chance otherwise.

Then he should not have made a statement he did not believe.

No one should fear the screeching idiots.
