Wall St. underwater: rising seas to hit NY hard

PARIS (AFP) – A predicted slowdown in Atlantic Ocean currents will cause sea levels along the US northeast coast to rise twice as fast as the global average, exposing New York and other big cities to violent and frequent storm surges, according to a new study.

Manhattan's Wall Street, barely a metre (three feet) above sea level, for example, will find itself underwater more often as the 21st century unfolds, said the study, published online Sunday in Nature Geoscience.

Sea levels vary across regions by up to 24 centimetres (9.5 inches), influenced in part by powerful currents that coarse around the globe in a pattern called the thermohaline circulation.

In the Atlantic, warm water moving north along the surface from the Gulf of Mexico helps temper cold winters in western Europe and along the US east coast, while frigid Arctic waters run south along the bottom of the sea.

The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded in early 2007 that expanding ocean water driven by climate change will drive up sea levels, on average, anywhere from 18 to 59 centimetres (seven to 23 inches) by 2100, depending on how successful we are at slashing greenhouse gas emissions.

This rising water mark will erase several island nations from the map, and is likely to cause devastation in Asian and African deltas home to tens of millions of people.

More recent studies, taking the impact of melting ice sheets in Greenland and the Western Antarctic into account, forecast an even higher increase of at least one metre (39 inches) over the same period.

Jianjun Yin of Florida State University and two colleagues wanted to find out what impact these sea level rises would have at a regional level, especially along the American eastern seaboard.

Boy, no kidding. Too bad no one’s thought of seawalls yet.

according to a new study.

The decline in critical thinking and past known anomaly's is the utter demise of our era. Giving these morons any credence is fatal.

Since this oceanic rise will also flood Boston and LA, methinks this is one of the absolute BEST thing that could happen to us...as long as we forbid the Obamaloons from moving to higher ground.

What a bunch of nonsense. Just the other day I was watching how they were measuring the jet stream phenomena as it whips the cold water down from the arctic between Greenland and Canada/ Greenland and Europe. These winds are so ferocious along the surface of the atlantic that waves can't even form. It's thought these jet stream winds are what set up the Atlantic currents which flow all the way down to the gulf them back up to the arctic. So, these IPCC idiots, in another attempt to keep their global warming/ the sky is falling/ oceans are rising scam- which is really just a ploy to take over control of all the worlds energy, and sending the world back into the dark ages- is claiming the jet stream is going to vanish, and the Atlantic oceans current is going to stop and stand still in a spot just of the coast of NY somewhere, while the rest of the oceans current is going to keep moving, and pile up like a frieght train?

Once again, without any "scientific " proof whatsoever to back up their claims, the IPCC fear mongers take another shot at scaring governments into destroying the worlds economies for no good reason at all, with a stupid claim a grade 5 "scientist" can discredit simply by stirring his chocolate milk with a spoon, and watching how the circular flow of his chocolate milk in his glass does not stop in one spot and "pile up" in another. It slows down evenly until it stops, not raising the level of chocolate milk anywhere in his glass.

"Sea levels vary across regions by up to 24 centimetres (9.5 inches), influenced in part by powerful currents that coarse around the globe in a pattern called the thermohaline circulation." Sea levels vary across regions because of the gravitational pull of the moon, not currents.

That makes sense. I had my earth science class watch Erik Larson’s Isaac’s Storm last year. The devastation was unbelievable. But you are right; they were tough. Amid all the loss, they did what they had to do.

And real scientists have concluded that Al Gore, the IPCC's cheif "scientist" apparently, is full of crap.

Further, there hasn't even been any "global warming" over the past 10 years, we have had instead, "global cooling".

Other real scientists have proved that any "global warming" over the 21 century is simply gradual warming reflecting our exit from the small ice. A scientist from the Alaska university has proven that the IPCC has chosen instead to ignore the data that was already there proving this, in order for the IPCC to push their political agenda of "global warming"

Isn’t this one of the theories in Gore’s movie that was debunked? Didn’t Gore base his rising oceans on the Gulf Stream that fluctuates as much as 20” every year?
