INDIANAPOLIS -- An 18-year-old man is being held without bond Monday in connection with the apparent beating death of his girlfriend's toddler.
Tayuan Chism went before a Marion County judge for an initial hearing in the case, but the judge granted a request for a 72-hour hold while prosecutors determine what charges they want to file, 6News' Julie Pursley reported.
Chism had nothing to say to reporters as he walked into court Monday.
Police said he beat his girlfriend's 14-month-old daughter, Lilianna Goodmann, last Wednesday in their home in the 2100 block of Amherst Drive. The child died on Friday.
"My grandson is innocent," said Adrienne Donaldson, Chism's grandmother. "He's not capable of doing such a cruel act."
As family members looked on and Chism cried before the judge, prosecutors asked that he be held without bond.
"Now, we're reviewing additional charges, potentially filing murder charges," said Marion County Chief Deputy Prosecutor David Wyser. "We need additional time to review the autopsy report, as well as continue with our investigation."
According to a probable cause affidavit, Chism told an investigator that he whipped the girl with a belt because she disrespected him and would not eat.
Several people were in the apartment at the time. At least one witness and the child's mother, Rachel Goodmann, told investigators that the beating lasted up to two hours and that the child was struck at least 50 times.
"It's just horrific. How does someone strike a baby repeatedly ... with a belt," Wyser said. "It's unacceptable."
Chism's family members were warned to stop emotional outbursts during the hearing and one person was asked to leave the courtroom.
Rachel Goodmann, who is also 14 weeks pregnant, was injured in the incident. Investigators said some of her injuries came from trying to stop the beating.

Every single person in that apartment should be charged with accessory to murder, even the mother who tried but failed to stop him. This went on for two hours and no one could stop him?!?
Beating a two year old to death for "disrespecting" him and not eating her food, the death penalty Indiana has is not even good enough for this guy. He needs to be beaten to death with a belt to begin to even come close to what this POS deserves for this.

Just so sad and sickening. What that poor baby went through.
Let's not rush to judgement. It's possible that they other people were prevented from doing anything by this thug. They might have been beaten, or terrorized, themselves.
But, otherwise, yeah...I agree "considering" murder charges? Seems pretty open and shut.

Two hours is plenty of time to take a baseball bat, knife or gun to stop the boyfriend. I'd just have to beg the courts for mercy later.
I am betting they weren't there to condemn him, but to support him like his Grandma did. I wonder if the word racism was used during the hearing or not...
Exactly, she didn’t try hard enough IMHO to not face charges herself.
Oh, I am sure the word was probably thrown around quite a bit. If the defendant is black, racism is the only reason for the criminal charge.
Or maybe even just call 911...didn't any of them think of that?
“Mom’s new boyfriend killed the child of mom’s last boyfriend?” Happens in the animal kingdom regularly - male grizzly bears will eat small cubs so their mother will go into estrous and allow them access. Same goes for African lions and hippos, also.

He was even worse than the animals. In this case the mother was already pregnant again, probably with his baby.

Isn’t that special that he cried in court? It must really suck to be around people your own size who want to do to you what you did to that baby? Why aren’t we seeing photos of the baby in this story, was she a white baby perhaps?
I have no idea if she was white or not, but the people sitting in prison waiting to greet him could care less I bet.
