Obama Administration Stabs Gun Owners in the Back (DoD Surplus Brass No Longer Sold for Reloading)
Townhall ^ | March 16, 2009 | John Caile

Posted on 03/16/2009 11:35:39 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

We warned you that Barak Obama would publicly deny his radical anti-gun agenda, while engaging in "stealth" attacks on private gun ownership. The most recent example is a directive from the Department of Defense that will severely aggravate the current ammunition shortage.

For those who either don't own guns (or have been living in a cave) supplies of ammunition are getting alarmingly low. Many retailers report shelves virtually empty of popular pistol and rifle ammo.

Most ammunition manufacturers depend on reclaiming used brass cartridge cases from the military, that are then recycled to make new ammunition. It is a system that has benefited both the military and the private sector, not to mention saving the taxpayer's money.

So it is beyond comprehension at a time of serious ammunition shortages, as well as budget shortfalls, that ammunition manufacturers would receive a letter stating the following:

"Effective immediately DOD Surplus, LLC, will be implementing new requirements for mutilation of fired shell casings. The new DRMS requirement calls for DOD Surplus personnel to witness the mutilation of the property and sign the Certificate of Destruction.

Mutilation of the property can be done at the DRMO, if permitted by the Government, or it may be mutilated at a site chosen by the buyer. Mutilation means that the property will be destroyed to the extent prevents its reuse or reconstruction. DOD Surplus personnel will determine when property has been sufficiently mutilated to meet the requirements of the Government."

Now, one has to be curious about WHO suddenly decided to mandate a new policy that makes a bad situation worse, has no benefit to the military, and will result in an increase in costs to the American taxpayer, precisely when the government is running a gigantic deficit.

But of course we know the real reason behind such actions - after losing a number of elections both locally and nationally, the anti-gun radicals have learned that the way to succeed is to avoid highly public confrontations like wholesale gun bans.

Instead they have adopted "incrementalism" - stealth campaigns that slowly rob legitimate gun owners of their ability to exercise their rights. They know that they don't need to take your guns away if they can simply make it more and more complex, expensive, and difficult to own and use your guns.

So, obviously, something like an ammo shortage is a dream come true for the gun haters. Why bother with their guns when simply denying them ammunition makes their firearms useless?

One wonders when gun owners who were stupid enough to have voted for Obama (and his like minded Democrats in the Congress) will finally stop denying the obvious.

This is an opportunity for MORE pro gun legislation.

Force the Dems to vote against it.

Defeat the Dems next year!

There has been discussion about this on some other forums and it has been suggested that this may be a mistake or something else and will be rectified. I don’t know but it’s something that I would expect from “zero” and it is huge.

When a friend of mine recently bought 4,000 rounds of ammo (of varying caliber) at a Virginia gun show (most) in hugh sealed cans, I thought he was being paranoid.

Well, I was wrong. I hope the 400 rounds of 357 and 20ga will last me

I don’t know if its real or not, but I would suspect that Obama would prefer to tax ammo than raise the cost by restricting brass. Restricting brass loses the govt money, where a tax would net the feds income. Of course they could be planning to do BOTH.

THe government doesn't care in the least about losing money. They don't work for it - they just take it from those of us who do work.

There are a lot of pretty sensible folks at The Firing Line, and the general conclusion was: This is a BS story-put into circulation by folks who wanted to rile us up.

There are a LOT of “let’s-rile-’em-up “ stories out there.

So the shell casings are now worth their value as scrap.

What overseas company will get it all?

It wont stay in the US, that’s a guarantee.

I doubt an american ammo mfg will get to use the supply of shredded brass, even to melt it down and start from scratch.

China, Korea, or some other huge buyer of US recycled material will get it all.

Maybe it will come back to us, as pieces of the old Chicago elevated trains system came back to us in WWII.

That’s why 10th amendment legislation at the state level is so necessary.

So what the article is saying is that the ammo we buy has used military brass??? OK for say .308/.223/9mm but 30-30/.45/30-06/30 carbine (do they still use that?) - you folks with those 50cal’s are in big trouble ....

Maybe. But, I remember that one a few months back about coming shortages of 9mm and .380ACP ammo, and I've been unable to find any .380ACP anywhere - online, in gunshops, even at Wally World.

Sometimes those stories turn out to be true.

IMO, NObama does NOT care a hoot how much money the government spends. He talks a good speech about saving money= especially at the Pentagon and on the military, but he is lying about everything.
Every time his lips move- telepromptor or not- HE is LYING. How much longer before someone really gets upset over his moves?

Kind of reminds me of this story:

Once upon a time, a woman was picking up firewood. She came upon a poisonous snake frozen in the snow. She took the snake home and nursed it back to health. One day the snake bit her on the cheek. As she lay dying, she asked the snake, "Why have you done this to me?" And the snake answered, "Look, b****, you knew I was a snake."

This is not BS. Go to Georgia Arms website at www.georgia-arms.com. They are one of the largest re-manufacturers of military brass in the country and are major vendors at gunshows throughout the South. Their headline banner explains exactly what the DOD has done. I spoke with the owner this morning to confirm.

I've bought Georgia Arms' products before; I believe this is probably true because that's a big, well-known company, not some unknown entity.

I don't doubt that Georgia Arms has verified that they received that notice. Has anyone confirmed it with DOD? There seem to be some discrepancies between what Georgia Arms was told and the last-known copy of the Demil classifications.

Would the only reason the 5th largest distributor of ammunition in the US put information like this out there for us to see, would be to cause a further inflation of ammo prices to the civilian market...

That would be Georgia Arms...I actually called them Friday and got their voicemail during business hours...???

At this point I am wondering if this is what they want us to believe...

I do not think anyone is riled up, but some of us are not surprised by any of this...
