TSA Adds a New Twist to Passenger Screening
yahoo/The Nation ^

Posted on 03/21/2009 8:32:00 AM PDT by nuconvert

Just when you thought you had the Transportation Security Administration rules all figured out, here comes a new procedure. Starting sometime in the next few months, you'll have to provide your birth date and gender whenever you buy an airplane ticket. The TSA is giving the airlines some time to change their websites and retrain their phone-reservations agents to be able to implement the agency's new Secure Flight program. Expect the changes on domestic flights by this summer.

The change is supposed to help reduce the number of Americans who are misidentified as individuals on the agency's no-fly and "selectee-for-further-inspection" watch lists. Up until now, airlines have done the work of vetting their passenger manifests for suspect names, but under the new program, the TSA assumes the job of monitoring watch lists full-time and implements "a uniform, efficient matching process."

This information is on your driver's license. Can't they just look at that or your passport to figure out who you are? I don't understand how this is going to be any different

The government will track everyone's movements.

People with matching names, but mismatched birthday and/or gender will be waived through.

(no terrorist would ever submit an incorrect birthday)

Over the phone or web, how are they supposed to know if you lied about your DOB? There’s also those who aren’t sure what their gender is that day.

The should have something in place so we’ll know if this will work for the general public. Perhaps do a study of it on a small scale first like have passengers bring their official BC to board Air Force One.

By showing my passport, my birthdate and gender are on record, this is freaking nuts.

I provide id for every damn thing I do but B. Hussein, I should just take his word on it.

What the hell happened to this country.

Some idiot TSA employee pulls a five year old boy because he is on the "no fly list", and now they want us to give our date of birth just to buy a plane ticket. Idiots! How much do you want to bet that they voted for Obama?

What the hell is this "gender" business? The proper word is "sex." The term "Gender" should be confined to linguistics.

I don’t understand this. They ask for your ID at the counter when you check your luggage or get your boarding pass. They ask to see your ID when you go thru security.
What more is giving your DOB when purchasing a ticket going to do?

I have a replacement knee, implanted 5 years ago. I am singled out for full screening every time I board a plane. Does anyone know of a certification that can be obtained through a law enforcement agency (State Police, FBI, whatever...) that tells the TSA that I am not a threat with a titanium joint? I fly a couple times a month and am tired of the 15 minute inch by inch examination. I am on a first name basis with a few of the screening personnel at specific airports, but they still have me assume the position for special clearance.

Well it for one gives your credit card and your info to the person processing your ticket, next it will be social security numbers too...but in general its just tracking.

I'm tired of being tracked.

“People with matching names, but mismatched birthday and/or gender will be waived through.”

There are probably several million of us with the same Biblical Name and a very common Celtic Surname on the no fly list.

I found out a copy of my passport works great to get by this impediment.

What difference will it make? The TSA will continue to give in depth inspections and everything short of a body cavity search to WWII widows, Korea vets and elderly Catholic priests as they always have.

Looks good on the records they keep, and they need to stay out of trouble for possible “profiling” allegations.
