Plan B Must Be Made Available to 17-Year-Olds
NYTimes ^ | 3/23/09 | NATASHA SINGER

A federal judge on Monday ordered the Food and Drug Administration to make the Plan B morning-after birth control pill available without prescription to women as young as 17. The judge ruled the agency had improperly bowed to political pressure from the Bush Administration when it set 18 as the age limit in 2006. The F.D.A. has 30 days to comply with the order, in which the judge also urged the agency to consider removing all restrictions on over-the-counter sales of Plan B. The drug consists of two pills that prevent conception if taken within 72 hours of sexual intercourse. Some women’s health advocates hailed the decision. “It is a complete vindication of the argument that reproductive rights advocates have been making for years, that in the Bush administration it was politics, not science, driving decisions around women’s health,” said Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights, a non-profit group that was one of the plaintiffs in the case against the F.D.A.

“Meh - life goes on. If we raise our kids right we shouldn’t have to worry about this sort of nonsense.”

No, we shouldn’t, but we must!

The harm this will cause to innumerable teens is unconscionable.

If the active “in/hot” crowd is under 18-years and the sex act is considered statutory rape, isn’t the government doing something to aid and abet a crime?

Well, in California, if you're a parent, and you call the school to ask if your child is there, they are required to lie if said child is off getting an abortion... I think they've slipped past aiding and abetting and went straight to accessory before and after the fact.

If parents are concerned about the drugs their minor children might be taking, shouldn’t the responsibility for that fall on the parents and not the federal government?

Kids can already buy every other OTC drug out there with no restrictions - and some of them can be lethal.

Thoughts like that are what have brought us to where we are today.

The reality is you may instill all of the right things in your children but fighting the cultural pressures are all but impossible to battle. How do you keep your kids from being exposed to this, you can't

Lets face it, it is extremely difficult to raise children in an optimum environment and this kind of crap makes it all but impossible.

People who advocate this type of nonsense are doing it to corrupt your children, and by extension the future of this country, that's a fact.

The government stopped listening to the people on 1/22/09. And, since the DEMS have complete control, they see no reason to listen to the people. And their megaphone - the MSM - isn’t listening either.....see teaparty coverage.

I agree with you - it is extremely hard to raise one’s children in a morally bankrupt society. However, it’s not impossible.

I just wish more stock would be placed in the parents rather than the federal government to do the job.

Your kids have to live with all the kids you did not raise and cannot directly impact. That’s why Americans until recently considered it the business of government to promote the common good by protecting children from influences that adults might be mature enough to handle. Thanks to the insane leftist notion that even small children should have unlimited opportunities to do as they please, government no longer plays a protective role, and even self-described conservatives are supporting the trend.

I couldn't agree more however it is impossible in today's climate to escape it.

You don't have enough time in the world nor should you have to take the time unlearn what your kid learned in school today. You can bet this pill will be available at the nurses office, the kid will be told where to get it, and you and I will pay for it. This is exactly where this leads to.

But God forbid your kid gets a headache

I have had about enough of this. 17 years do not need this period.

I read recently in the Yale Daily News that a recent survey of co-eds showed something like 30 - 35% of them have used “Plan B” at least once.

What sad lives they must live.

Our children can already walk into a Rite-Aid or CVS and buy a pack of condoms, so I fail to see the difference.

Either require a prescription for both or for none.

So true. The pill does prevent conception because it blocks ovulation, but that is certainly not the case with Plan B. Conception may have already occurred in the Fallopian tube (as it normally does), and, if so, the embryo will have already gone through many cell divisions before it reaches the uterus. With Plan B, this developing embryo will never have a chance to be implanted - a de facto abortion.

They’re pushing it down to get it in the schools... trust me.

Snugs, are your nurses giving out contraception, referrals for abortion or Plan B in schools?

...it was politics, not science, driving decisions around women’s health,” said Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights...

So are the lefties back to thinking their ideas are scientific again?

Karl Marx and the early socialists believed their ideas were the true science, but then when socialism was proven to be a failure by the concrete facts of impoverishment and genocide, the left embraced postmodernism which said there is no such thing as objective reality, meaning that socialism could only be judged by its intentions, thus sparing it the condemnation of factual evaluation. But now I guess they figure most people have forgotten history and so they're back to claiming their ideas as science again.

Of course the real question here is, why doesn't science also say the morning after pill should be available to 16 years olds?

Another question, kind of off topic, is, if leftists are so scientific, why do they totally abandon science when they regard the markets? It's amazing how detached and technical they are when it comes to, say, nipping a human life in the bud. But by golly they can sure get fired up over corporate profits or the minimum wage! That's when they totally drop the science routine and become flaming moralizers who are totally impervious to any technical argument about the subtle workings of the markets.

“...Meh - life goes on. If we raise our kids right we shouldn’t have to worry about this sort of nonsense...”

I posted the below reply on a typically lib website that ran this same article - and really attracted a lot of negative comments!

To all those who think randomly giving the morning after pill to young girls is a great ruling: you should become more responsible parents, vs. letting your young daughters sleep around and passing responsibility to a toxic pill to deal with the consequences of your failures.

Have a little more respect for your children and yourself instead of simply promoting pills, spaying, neutering, aborting as the answer.
