I Got to Meet a Soldier Today...
Vanity | 3/23/09 | HotLead61

In Wal-Mart, of all places. Army uniform, just minding his own business. I walked up to him and asked if he would answer a "survey question" for me. He said, "Sure."

I flat-out asked him, "If you were to recieve an Order to confiscate the weapons of another American, would you obey that order?"

Without hesitation, he replied "No way."

I followed up with the second question..."Do you know anyone that would follow such an order?" His reply? "Not at all."

My question for any Freepers who happen to read this is...Do you have a story about a military member with whom you have had a similar conversation? Or are you a member of the military (or any branch of Law Enforcement, for that matter) who would like to share their views on the subject?

Did you thank the soldier for his service to our country?

I always try to do this. I’ll never forget a male and female in camo I ran into when shopping with my mother in Wal Mart. I put my hand on the man’s shoulder and said to both of them, “I want to thank you for your service to our country.” I’ve never seen smiles as big.

One good thing about a volunteer army most of them will be conservatives. Obama will figure that out and create his version of the SA which is already is in the making.

I always touch them and say, “We appreciate you!”

They always grin or say, “Thank you, Ma’am!”

Good question, but no, not this time.

I usually make sure to thank them, but I guess I was so “blessed” by his response that I lost my head. Thanks for the reminder.

I am a member of the NM national guard; I was present at the Katrina relief effort. There WAS gunn grabbing there, though I had never heard of it until years later. As I understand it, it was the local law enforcement that was put upon to “collect” the weapons of law-abiding citizens.

That’s cute. You do know the US Army won’t be used when they come for the guns.

I didn’t mean to be preachy. I have a nephew/Godson who did two tours in Iraq...it would be nice if people thanked him once in awhile, so I figure if it goes around, it comes around.

When I see troops in uniform I’m always preoccupied with showing them respect and courtesy, so it’s never occurred to me to ask. But I do like the answer you got.

I think that your question may have meant something equally as weighty, you DO care what we soldiers are doing. That can be worth as much as a ‘thank you’ any day; knowing that what you do _matters_.

Actually, I have figured as much. But I couldn't resist the chance to find another "ally" into whose eyes I could look and ask such a question. My hope is that there will be enough "people with guns" (whether military, LE or just regular citizens) to counteract any efforts to pull off the "Big Grab".

That was my first thought--GIs won't confiscate, but LEOs will.

Thanks for your service....

Of course the current vets will be the vanguard of any true justice we see in the next few decades. I thought we all knew that without saying.

Did you hear about the required youth service O is setting up?

WTF is with the bouncy tales tonight? I followed one over from the DUmp, and now I bump into another one. Is this becoming the norm here.

If you had really started questioning a real soldier like that they probably would have smiled and walked away shaking their head.

y God, the stupid, it hurts.

Never thought of it like that, but it rings true to me. Now that you mention it, I can put myself in his place, and I believe I would have appreciated the question as well.

Our soldiers are a lot like the people post here just they have more guts than most of us. :-)

They are real heroes who usually have a thankless job.

Today my son finished his liberty and recruiter's assistance and headed out for School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton. I may have told you that one of my gifts to him on his graduation from boot camp to Marine was a copy of the U.S. Constitution (and a damn fine cigar).

I held the Constituion in front of him and said "THIS is why you are a United States Marine. THIS is what you have sworn to defend".

Pray for our troops and for this Country.

Sure have, been following that one closely. What is even more worrisome to me is the coming "Civilian Security Force" that Mark Levin (among others) have sounded off about. (I presume that the "Youth Brigade" & "CSF" are separate & distinct?) You know, the force that will be "just as well-trained, just as well-funded" as the US military...

I see one of Dear Leader’s SA, I’ll bust him at 600 yards, cause I don’t care if it’s a clean kill...

You got a problem with some good news, Doc? Or are you always gloom & doom? We've got enough bad news already. Maybe you should go back to DU & harass some of the 0Zombies there. And don't presume that you speak for any other member of the Armed Forces (if you are one). In any case, keep your negative attitude to yourself--or carry it back to DU where you'll have plenty of company.
