Immediate Response Needed For Orlando FReeper Convention
March 24, 2009

Posted on 03/24/2009 1:57:53 PM PDT by Roos_Girl

Hey y'all,

I am in the process of negotiating with the Gaylord Palms hotel to hold our Freeper Convention there on April 25. We can get a rate of $99 per night (which is a great rate for this really nice hotel) and the convention room will be complimentary.

For that rate they are asking for us to block a minimum of 40 rooms; if some people are staying both Friday and Saturday nights that would count as 2 rooms. The contract will be written such that if all 40 rooms are not picked up we would have to pay the difference. So, for example, if only 10 rooms were actually reserved the person signing the contract (me) would owe them $2970. I told them those terms were not acceptable, but they seem to be willing to work out some other terms if I can get them a firm number on how many guest rooms will be reserved.

Please mail me by Friday, 3/27/09, and let me know if you will be staying at the hotel and for how many nights. Without getting committments from you I feel uncomfortable agreeing to even 10 rooms, though I hope we have a better showing than that!

The convention will be on April 25, a Saturday, from 8am to 6pm. Room reservations for Friday and Saturday will count towards our minimum number required.

People in FL need to step up and volunteer to keep a regularly updated blog about a specific local FL congressman.

What they are saying, how they are voting, their schedule, etc...

We should tie all the FL congressman reporting blogs together through links, etc.

We need to create a clear map of what our elected officials are doing.

Maybe we can create a blog network across the entire country with people blogging and linking to things about their elected officials.

We don’t get accountability from the political class...let’s force it!

Great ideas. I agree that we need to turn the tide by ACTION. And, I’m all up for crying in my actual adult beverage during cocktail hour!

I’m thinking like each of you...I have some out of the box suggestions, but the last time they were not well received.

I don’t want to do that again, but do not want to just have a “vent event”.

I think we ALL need to agree that all suggestions should be heard. Nobody should be vilified for any suggestion.

These are unique times and we need to be able to freely discuss possibilities. Our entire lives we have been lead to believe that something like this could not happen in our country.

Well it is happening and we have to adjust our perspectives so we can have some productive conversations on what we need to do.

I think there is an out-reach channel, political channel, and a very serious planning channel that we need to do.

We need to identify point-people that can coordinate and drive goals so that we have real results. We also need to know who we can count on if this ALL goes south.

As much as we'd love to participate, we simply can't at this time...time and money, time and money.

We will be able to participate in the Mobile Tea Party which finally has a new location.. Cooper Riverside Park, Apr. 15 noon-2pm.

Good points by surfer in #60. In addition, I’d like to toss out a few more ideas.

All politics is local, so I’d like to see various Freepers who will be attending offer to do a little research and talk about their respective congressmen. What’s the status,a nd hope for the district? If it’s a GOP seat..is the person conservative, or a RINO. Safe for 2010? If it’s a Dem seat, is it hopeless, or is there a chance. Is there a viable conservative looking to run in the district?

As for the Senate race....well, I really don’t want to swap one RINO for another. If Christ runs, as looks likely..well, he’ll be heard to beat. He will keep the seat for the GOP..But I do think we need to find, and support, a real conservative who will run against him in the primary..and keep him honest..

Ok, I’ll post it again for everyone. Here are my ideas, I’ve asked for it before and hopefully y’all have sent it to SeekTheTruth, please send her your Top 5 items that you think need to be discussed at the convention. She is compiling them and now that the Tea Party I is over should have time to get them all together. So as not to overwhelm her I asked that everyone keep their items to 5 words or less, just so we get the general idea.

1. Goals for Florida 2010 elections - also included in this is action items for HOW WE GET THERE

2. Build a working network with other conservative grass roots, local organizations - I think this goes along with your mobile platform idea, surfer.

3. We need a conservative platform that we all agree on to move forward - talk points, etc, whatever you want to call it.

4. We need to develop contacts with (and promote) conservative representatives. Ken and I have briefly discussed the Senate seat that Martinez is leaving. We have got to get behind, support, promote and get elected someone that is NOT crist.

If y’all want to have the bitch session afterwards that’s fine by me, but I’m going to hold everyone to it throughout the day and if you’re taking too long on “poor us” you’ll be put in the time-out corner. ;)

Your thoughts about the Governor are well founded. You recognize the futility in a group like this to “buck” the party and get a true conservative candidate.

We have little power to choose candidates except on the local level and State Representatives. These are the National candidates of the future.

“Keeping them honest” is a great comment. They only respond to overwhelming pressure when it effects re-election and sometimes local press and radio. I wish it were otherwise.

We have to keep trying!

Is Crist running for the Senate?

In an off year, turn out will be low. It always is. And in a primary election..who comes out? The hard core base..which in the Florida GOP is fairly conservative. People won’t be switching registrations for local or state wide races, like they did for the presidential primaries. So even though Christ is very popular, and probably the odds on favorite to win a state wide general election..in an off-year GOP primary, it’s not going to be a cake walk for him, especially if he has an articulate, conservative opponent. And I think one of the things we can, and need to do, is to help identify and support that person..

I have a suggestion for the agenda which I'll post tonight and I'll ping Seek the Truth to it.

It's something I've been pining to post on our state forum for a while. But since this is a regional convention and freepers from other states will hopefully attend, I think this convention is a better place to bring it up.

I have an appointment now and things to do, sigh, so I'll post here after dinner.
