Missouri Highway Patrol rescinds controversial militia report
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch ^ | March 26, 2009 | Roseann Moring

Posted on 03/26/2009 5:15:43 AM PDT by GoldStandard

A report about modern militia activity will no longer be distributed to Missouri law enforcement officers after receiving nationwide criticism that it contains political profiling.

The decision came Wednesday, hours after Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder called for Department of Public Safety Director John Britt to be placed on leave because of the report, which said followers of third-party political candidates might be militia members.

But the superintendent of the Missouri Highway Patrol said Britt wasn't to blame. Instead, Col. James Keathley said, the issue is a flawed oversight system, which will be revamped. Keathley said the report was sent to highway patrol members without being reviewed by him or Britt.

Since the report was leaked to the public earlier this month, it has been criticized by conservatives and third-party candidates.

The report was produced by the Missouri Information Analysis Center as a guide for state troopers. The center, created by the Department of Homeland Security after Sept. 11, is a means to share security information between different entities.

The report, titled, "The Modern Militia," specifically mentioned 2008 presidential candidates Republican Ron Paul, Libertarian Bob Barr and the Constitution Party's Chuck Baldwin. It said that militia members "most commonly associate with 3rd party political groups."

This is exactly why our founding fathers wrote the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Some fuzz brain is always quoting police chiefs, etc., when the bottom line is that we should listen to them on only a very narrow range of items. They instead should listen to us and we should enforce our constitutional rights.

You can bet that the Missouri troopers will not be worrying about ACORN or The 0bama Militia.

Of course the troopers will turn all cases over to The Missouri Truth Squad.

Disgusting!

This was what I received in an email yesterday:

Constitution Party Issues Missouri Travel Advisory

Lancaster, PA (March 25, 2009) The Constitution Party has issued a warning to Americans traveling within the state of Missouri that they might be considered a threat by law enforcement if they display certain bumper stickers on their cars. A recent report issued through the Missouri Information Analysis Center (MIAC) titled “The Modern Militia Movement” was released with the approval of Missouri Governor Jay Nixon and the Missouri State Police. It labels Americans with a variety of political beliefs as potential “militia members”, “domestic terrorists” and “radicals”.

The Constitution Party decries this report as political profiling and strongly suggests those considering a trip to the Show Me state be aware of the possibility they could be pulled over by a Missouri State Police officer simply for displaying a politically oriented sticker on their vehicles.

In the MIAC report, those who support 3rd party candidates like Constitution Party presidential candidate Chuck Baldwin and Libertarian Bob Barr as well as Congressman Ron Paul were labeled “dangerous” and a “threat” to law enforcement.

The Constitution Party’s Chuck Baldwin voiced outrage saying: “This is a classic case of broad-brushed police profiling. Can you imagine the fallout of this preposterous report had the names Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Maxine Waters been used instead of the names Ron Paul, Chuck Baldwin, and Bob Barr?”

According to the MIAC report labeled “law enforcement sensitive” those considered a threat include citizens against:

Gun control
Illegal immigration
Abortion
The United Nations
The North American Union
The Federal Reserve
The IRS
Unconstitutional Mandatory Universal Service Programs
Baldwin went on to say: “...At least 75% of the American people would oppose at least one or more of these... According to the MIAC report that is sufficient to make them potential dangerous “militia members.”

In response to the MIAC report, the three candidates wrote a letter to Missouri governor Jay Nixon demanding retraction of defamatory and inaccurate characterizations.

The state issued an “apology” to the three men but made no mention of clearing up the myriad other inaccuracies found in the report. The soft “apology” actually blamed those who were profiled saying they “misinterpreted” the report!

In addition to issuing the Travel Advisory, the Constitution Party is encouraging all liberty-minded Americans to contact Missouri governor Jay Nixon to tell him to remove all MIAC report references which cast political opinion in a negative light.

Governor J. Nixon may be contacted at:

Notice that whenever a democRat is the “Chief Law Enforcement Officer” it’s the citizens of the USA that they target as “terrorists”?

Check, check, check, check, check, check....

And I’ll add:
Member of an “intolerant” religion that believes in absolute, objective truth - Christianity.

John 18:37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”

Why are they so paranoid about freedom , guns and capitalism?

They (demo, libs, socialists) can not stand for any one to disagree with them.

Very unhappy people.

All of those things put you outside of their control.

That is their driving passion, to control your behavior and thinking.

I like the term “political profiling.” It takes a bad word the left invented - “profiling” - and turns it against them. We need to use the phrase often.

Isn’t St. Louis where the prosecutor tried to form the so-called ‘Truth Squads’ to intimidate Obama’s opposition?

Part of the long time political battle between Kansas City, St Louis and the rest of the state.

Been going on for years and years, outside is winning some battles now, but it is close.

“I like the term “political profiling.””

you have a good point but this isn’t really profiling IMO. Its unlawful infringement of Constitutional rights and blatant intimidation and abuse of power.

It’s Nuts. I have always liked MO. It’s a beautiful state, and friendly folks. I cannot fathom how people are allowing this to happen to their state. Most folks outside of the cities seem to hold fast to their right to bear arms.

You are of course exactly right. My point was we need something to use in debates, letters to the editor, blogs, talk radio, etc. A hot-button phrase to catch attention.
