Only in America would this be considered an economic crisis. There are many countries in the world where the poorest here would be wealthy beyond anyone’s dreams. THOSE folks are not getting abortions and vasectomies — many are counting babies as blessings.

What a bunch of spoiled whiners. Best that they not breed.

Sad... too bad no one ever told these women where babies come from...

Call me crazy for saying so (it's been done before), but IMHO a womans 'choice' ends when she makes her womb available for the possiblity of fertilization.

So will the Boston Globe demand that Obama bail out the babies by opposing tax hikes? How about if the Globe opposes MA Gov Deval Patrick’s tolls and taxes? How many babies would be saved in just that one state?

The first anecdote about the flip-flop woman is hard to believe. Can someone, especially a woman not a first time mother, really go from a "wanted child" and "pre-natal care" to having an abortion? With all of the goodies and subsidies offered by the government?

There was another theme in this story -- in nearly every case, there was a "boyfriend," "common law husband" or "absent father". Women (and children) were better off when they were not so sexually "liberated."

Or, if abstaining is inconceivable (no bun intended), why not have the baby and get your tubes tied right after the delivery? I’m not advocating this, but it would be a heck of a lot easier to have one baby you know will be your last than it would be to have an abortion for financial reasons.

If birthing a baby costs $30,000 we we’re in bigger trouble than we realize. That’s outrageous.

Many hospitals have a low-cost or free prenatal clinic.

The SCHIP programs cover prenatal care for low-income women.

The woman herself may not be covered for anesthesia during labor and postpatum, but prenatal care is covered, and the woman will likely be covered if family income is low enough.

The other problem is that the states may not be processing or accepting SCHIP applicants due to budget shortfalls, but the article never mentions the possibility of state health care or clinics - of Planned Parenthood making the referrals, or the reasons why that wouldn’t work.

Finally - $30,000 may be the billed cost but the insurance companies will be paying only about 5-6K. The patient-consumer should have the right to pay out-of-pocket the lowest fee accepted by the hospital.

That woman is, however, a very cold killer. Her OWN baby. What a NUTCASE - she could find some way to support it.

“What about abstaining?”

I don’t see long term abstinence as a viable option. It will take years for most families to recover financially from this recession. How can a couple be abstinent for that period of time? Not realistic at all.

I think that the $30,000 is a little high. My wife is expecting twins in July, and we are expecting the cost of this high risk pregnancy to be around 22,000 - 25,000.

If they aren’t married, it is realistic. People did it all the time before the last century. It’s only the decadent and depraved generation that has a problem with it.

For married couples, why not adoption? Why does abortion have to be their ‘choice’? Murdering a child because you can’t afford to have a child is not defendable.

Sorry, but I do not think of a married couple who does not want to abstain for several years as decadent and depraved. I don’t support the choice of abortion in any circumstance. I wasn’t around during the previous century, so I don’t know if people abstained or not. To be honest, I doubt it. They just got married and pretended that the baby was early.

To be sure, there is much more promiscuity now than ever before. I am 100% certain that the answer isn’t to tell people to stop having sex, unless they can afford to support numerous children.
