“Asking questions = detainment and harrasment”
Asking a question or two doesn’t equate to removing someone from the line and sequestering him in a room.
“While it might generate a question even from a TSA agent, once the gentleman refused to answer, the agent had no business interrogating him further about it. Much less subjecting him to the gestapo tactics.”
Absolutely — I totally agree. My only position was that a high amount of cash like that might’ve raised questions. That’s all. Sheesh.
I’m sure they filed the form. There was no need for you to be involved in that part.
Bank regulators will be looking for a copy of it when they review the bank records.
He was removed because he REFUSED to answer the questions. Are you of the mindset that LE questions must be answered? Why would you feel a need to even ask any questions about the money? In other words, what makes you think the possesion of money warrants any questions and if so, over what amounts?
No problemo... Peace
That only works in free countries.
Why?
What POSSIBLE threat to the airplane or passengers does cash present?
WTF business would it be of yours why anyone has cash on them?
Is carrying legal tender now a suspicious activity? Apparently.

ping for later
$4700 cash would be TOTALLY appropriate for international travel.
Sheesh!
This is getting blown out of proportion, but anyway...
“He was removed because he REFUSED to answer the questions.”
And that was wrong. Never said I condoned it.
“Are you of the mindset that LE questions must be answered?”
No.
“Why would you feel a need to even ask any questions about the money?”
Drug cartel $ laundering ops or terror cell funding, perhaps?
See above.
“and if so, over what amounts?”
No particular baseline, but c’mon — you mean to tell me a huge wadful of cash wouldn’t at least in some small way spike your attention?
‘nuff said, now.
READ YOUR OWN TAGLINE ....or are you too busy grazing?
“$4700 cash would be TOTALLY appropriate for international travel.”
Good for you. Don’t get robbed over there.
I believe that's only if you are leaving the country. This was a domestic flight. He shouldn't even have been questioned. He was carrying nothing even suspicious unless you're a paranoid government jackboot.
“READ YOUR OWN TAGLINE ....or are you too busy grazing?”
I don’t need to prove anything here. My past postings are proof enough where I stand. You’re reading WAY too much into my original comment.
I really hate the idea that I can’t carry a large amount of cash without being a suspect for something with no other proof. In reality, I don’t carry more than maybe $200 at any given time, often far less than that, but still...
According to the story I heard about that fella's case, the officer that stopped him said his having $2000 cash WAS probable cause because he was close to the Florida state line (in Alabama)... them finding 2 joints in his luggage didn't help. Went from bad to worse when they didn't pick up his clothing and luggage (minus 2 joints) until AFTER they were good and rained on.
I am easily intimidated, especially by those in uniform and I've been told by LEO friends that saying no IS probable cause in the minds of LEO, so just do it cause when one says no, they are going to jail, one way or another.
TSA must be staffed now by ACORN!!!
Yeah, they'd fess up right away!
