$4,700?? That IS a bit out of the ordinary. If I were a TSA guy, I’d have some questions about it too.

I thought TSA looked for bombs and weapons. The agents I've had dealings with couldn't count past the digits on their two hands.

$4700 isn’t that much money.

Wait until obama turns the US into another Zimbabwe.

$4700 won't even buy a cup of coffee.

Usually, I’m the person, who protests bs like what we got on that plane with the maggot.

She had worked about a half day and wasn’t that excited about a night flight to the UK. She realized the guy was a jerk who was keeping her from setting down and getting ready for the takeoff, a couple of glasses of wine and dinner.

A couple of years ago, she had an over zealous TSA agent patting her down at Midway Airport. In a loud voice she said, “By now, you know that I don’t have anything there but my breasts. Do you pay TSA to get to do this?”

I broke out laughing and so did the male TSA guy, who was standing by me while my wife was being mauled.

The mauling and patting stopped immediately.

I know of a man who was stopped for speeding. The man had $2000 in his wallet and when the officer saw that, had the man get out and requested to search his vehicle.

Let me tell all you guys a little secret. It's called the Fourth Amendment. If a policeman asks to search your vehicle, you don't have to say yes. If you do say yes and change your mind, you can tell him at any time that you revoke your permission. Make him come up with probable cause to search or a warrant. Refusal does not give them probable cause. They can hold you for a reasonable time if they want to get a dog, but every minute you wait makes a greater case for a 4th amendment violation.

The only reason your buddy got arrested was that he waived his fourth amendment rights. Now if the police had a dog with them they could run the dog around the vehicle and that is not legally considered a search.

$4700, well within the legal limit you don’t have to declare it. I believe $10k is the current minimum you have to declare.

That is not the point, they are just following the lead of many law Enforcement agencies around the country these days that stop someone, find a "large" amount of cash on them and seize it as "possible" drug funds. IF the person gets their money back it is after spending thousands retaining a lawyer and proving they are not moving drugs... Innocent until proven guilty? not with this corrupt government.

“I thought TSA looked for bombs and weapons. The agents I’ve had dealings with couldn’t count past the digits on their two hands.”

Very true there. It’s just that $4,700 is an unusually high amount to carry and it would instinctively raise eyebrows.

A few years ago I won a $5000 jackpot on a $5 slot machine. State taxes were taken out (no Fed) and w-2 forms made out. I was paid in cash right on the spot. The big jackpot on that slot was $100,000. I asked them if I had won the big one would they pay in cash they said yes if that is the way you want it!

Guilt complex? LOL! Not at all, but don’t you find that at least a bit unusual? And to clarify, I didn’t intend to imply confiscation or undue hassling to the passenger, but a question or two might not be out of order, especially if he/she is heading out of the country.

Now you’ve done it. The drug warriors will be all over the thread now, defending the indefensible.

No, I do not find $4700 in cash unusual at all. As a matter of fact it is nothing more than a good weekend.

Eastforker, calm down. I didn’t say I supported harassment and detainment, I referenced asking a question. Know the difference. As for your “sheep” comment, my previous posts speak for themselves. Not one shred of wool here.

You can't slit somebody's throat with money and it generally doesn't explode.

It's absolutely none of the TSA's business how much cash a free citizen chooses to carry, where he got it from, or what he might do with it.

Not denying that at all. Merely stated it might raise questions. Again... I don’t condone detainment or harassment of the passenger, OK?

While it might generate a question even from a TSA agent, once the gentleman refused to answer, the agent had no business interrogating him further about it. Much less subjecting him to the gestapo tactics.
