Molotov cocktails and scaffolding poles were thrown at police in the eastern French city as hundreds of anarchists and other demonstrators went on the rampage.

"We've had to cancel a planned visit to the hospice because of the danger to all involved," said a spokesman for the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy. His glamorous wife, former model Miss Bruni, had been due to visit the sick and the dying in the centre of the ancient city, on France's border with Germany.

But determined thugs, many wearing balaclavas and ski masks to hide their faces from police were doing everything they could to disrupts the carefully arranged programme.

Some 1,000 protesters chanted and waved banners outside the hospice, accusing the leaders' wives of being "spoiled tools of capitalism", according to one banner. When violence broke out around 100 officers responded by throwing flash bombs and volleys of tear gas into the crowds.

Afterward, the protesters headed toward the Europa Bridge, where they sprayed more slogans using paint canisters and set fire to a French customs station, Many of the gang - described as "small army" by one police officer - were members of the sinister Black Bloc group, a notorious anarchist gang.

"snip" Cars and wheelie bins were set on fire in Strasbourg , as police vehicles including armoured cars came under constant attack. When they were held back by officers using tear gas and baton charges, the mob set up makeshift barricades using timber and concrete blocks from local building sites.

the G20 summit in London," said a French police spokesman. "The gangs of trouble makers are highly organised. Agitators have arrived from all over the world, including Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom."

How can this be... Geraldo just said that the trip is now all about Jackie... er Mrs. Obama. She's brilliant, a lawyer, an exquisite physical specimen (his words) and so unbelievably stylish.

Geraldo had an inbred Kennedy parasite blabbing about the new "American tone" in Europe thanks to Obama's great success over in Europe.

He's really "set the tone" for complete Nuclear disarmament.

Whew! I'm so glad that everybody is going to throw their nukes away. Just like we got rid of the biological weapons programs, neutron bombs, chemical weapons technology and ....... oh yeah.. let's get rid of land mines too. Yipee....

I wish big bad Bush had done that... just thrown all the stuff out.

"The gangs of trouble makers are highly organised.

They aren't trouble makers, they are criminals, and what they are doing isn't anywhere near being protected by free speech.

Erman....I was watching too. I was almost hoping N Korea would’ve launched that missile, to interrupt with breaking news so I didn’t have to listen to another Kennedy heaping praise on Democrats.

Why does France tolerate thugs like this.

I think appeasing and surrendering is in their blood.

I was surprised at the violence because I thought Europe and the world community just loved Obama. I thought they were happy to be rid of Bush. Or so we were told.

Could it be that the Anarchists/socialists/radicals/terrorists will be mad at us no matter who is president? Even if our president says we are going to live up to our highest ideals to placate world public opinion???????

Some new tone.

European leaders enthusiastically praised President Barack Obama’s new Afghan strategy at a NATO summit Saturday but held their ground on a central disagreement and offered only military trainers and extra security forces for upcoming elections.

The irony is if Sarkozy just allowed the gendarmes to have their way for five minutes, there would be a serious beat down on the beatniks’ noggins. They’d think twice about coming back to France, assuming they could think at all with their newly mushed brains.
