Chief Cabinet Secretary Hosoda of Ruling Conservative Party in Japan (LDP) rakes former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and top US State Department Negotiator Christopher Hill over the coals for their appeasement of and being fooled by North Korea.

Calls them both "weak-kneed" 弱腰 (yowagoshi = "weaklings") and very mistaken in their tactics with North Korea at the "Six Party Talks" (which Hill handled for the US). He went on to say the two were totally hoodwinked and now Japan is in a very dangerous situation. Several persons at the LDP event said that Japan must move forward to defend itself and even one lawmaker (unquoted) as saying the atmosphere is even to the point of Japanese starting to consider the advisability of developing their own nuclear weapon(s) in defense.

The original Japanese is amazing. To have US officials singled out by name is pretty rare, the article says.

To be balanced and fair here, in private I am sure Japanese officialdom, in the majority, are fuming about the “new” Rice, Dr. Susan Rice, and of course, over Teleprompter-in-Chief as well. They might be a bit muted since these are actually in power in D.C., but time will tell. Maybe after a few cold Kirin beers, most J. politicians will give you their “honne” about the Messiah and his foreign policy staff in the aftermath of this fiasco and failed test.

Thanks for the post. Very interesting. Obambi may downsize the US nuclear forces but unless he changes the US foreign policy towards NK and Iran post-haste, we will probably see many more countries join the nuclear arms race.

Barack Obama, the rabbit in North Korea's headlights, is Jimmy Carter II

It’s likely that the new and traditional allies in Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and the Caucasus will leave America behind and forge their own alliance.

Maybe in 2012, the US can catch up if it is still standing on both its legs.

Let me tell you, an ocean of bitter tears is going to be wept because of what amounts to a concerted criminal neglect by the world’s democracies of the threat posed by rogue states like North Korea. And there will be an ocean of blood to accompany the tears.

In years past, the US would have taken out targets in Iran and North Korea if we thought they were moving towards hav ing nuclear weapons or ICBM’s. But the Iraq War made the Bush administration gun shy.

I always figured that the thing the Chinese fear most is a nuclear armed Japan. But that’s what they’ll get if they aren’t careful.

Without the Americans and Japanese to check them, the Chinese are starting to throw their weight around, but I bet they still fear the potential of Japan.

“the Iraq War made the Bush administration gun shy”

or rather BDS did. The constant shrill shouting. We have to learn to block that out...

It sucked us dry of our international resources, and it completely occupied his attention to the exclusion of Iraq and to the detriment of being able to keep them (DPRK) in constant view and check, and most importantly, in a state of fear and doubt. Their confidence was noticeably boldened.

They essentially said to State (while reigning in Defense and John Bolton and Dick Cheney-type hawks/realists) "hey, look, we can't start a new fist fight out in Asia in the midst of the sh*t in Iraq/Afghanistan, so YOU (Chris Hill) try your best to reign the Norkies in at the table in Beijing." Meanwhile, the North stalled and ployed, threatened and stormed out, came back, stormed out again, played games, stalled more, worked behind the scenes, (various Freepers screamed on FR!), kept on producing nuclear material, and worked on improving their missile delivery system, taking slow but sure steps forward--particularly in the last three years when Bush Appeasement mode shifted from "Axis of Evil" mode and economically strangulating them. The sea change was when Chris Hill stumbled over his shoeless, hurredly trying to unfreeze their assets in Macao in Banco Delta Asia (how pathetic and a sign of weakness).

This is a problem of being tied down in one region of the world (Middle East) and a potent enemy somewhere else, i.e. like here in Asia, is, the enemy a) knows it, b) faces Vidkun Quisling/Neville Chamberlain-type naive doofuses across the negotiating table perceptibly hot for any deal, whether it intrinsically sucks or not, or whether they have to be responsible for it 10 years later or not. All this is process-oriented State Department bullshit in some remote room somewhere; the real action is in the nuke, chem and bio labs and rocket factories of the DPRK largely hidden from Western view.

God help us. Democrat and Republican foolish administration ALIKE.

Let them take care of it then and we can save our defense dollars for ourselves.

If this country would have stood behind Bush then most of that wouldn’t have been a problem. We went into Iraq and Afghanistan and were riding a wave until the dems and the weak kneed republicans started screaming that Bush was a loser. THEY gave it away and made it a long drawn out affair and THEY are the ones who gave NOKO and Iran the courage to kick sand in our face. If this country would have stood behind Bush, Iraq would have been over by now, NOKO would have been handled and Iran would be silent.

Wait your turn. We have to pull them out of Germany first.

I love nihonshu , but hangovers are killers , which is why some years ago I switched to shochu & water as my main drink here in sushiland . I still buy sake from time to time because as I said I love the taste , but pretty much keep to beer ( not Sapporo BTW ...English , when I can find a sale ) and sho chu these days .
