Officials say a K9 was shot and a suspect killed after an office-involved shooting Monday in St. Paul.
The incident happened in the 1500 block of Iowa Avenue East on a report of an armed intoxicated man in an alley around 6 p.m., according to St. Paul Police.
St. Paul Police spokesman Pete Panos says three officers responded and opened fire on 34-year-old Robert Jerome Jeske, of St. Paul. Jeske died at the scene.
During the confrontation, the dog Boomer was shot. He was taken to the University of Minnesoeta were he underwent surgery and is in stable condition, according to police.
Panos says the three officers will be placed on paid-administrative leave per department standards.
Boomer was recently featured on the Animal Planet show K9 Cops. According to the shows website, Boomer is handled by Officer Patrick Murphy. Boomer is a patrol dog, trained to use his nose to find people and evidence.
This is a low-volume list, so dont worry!

“Jeske” - nor the rest of the name - doesn’t sound Somalian.
I’d guess, being in MN and having a similar name myself, and seeing all the white guys around there, German.
That’s why I never make statements like “Humans are more important than animals”, etc. It’s all dependent. Largely, yes, it’s true, but not in many cases. I’d much rather let the crook or Moslem terrorist fall to his death than the dog.
There are several reasons why dogs are around for cops - 1 because of what the poster thinks - they are relatively expendable; and 2 because they can do things to apprehend that the other humans can’t. They run faster, jump better, and just are able to detect quicker (often at all) with all senses than the humans can. And thus, they more likely catch the human scumbags. Like the firearm, they are truly an “extension” of the human cop, furthering his reach.
And there’s nothing wrong with that.
BTW, let’s change the line to:
“If I was in an alley, had a few drinks and a GUY came at me and I had a gun I think my first instinct would be to shoot the GUY.”
You called him “bad guy”. I say screw the bad guy. Once upon a time, no nonsense meant alot fewer crimes and many safer places.
Prayers for Boomer. Another canine hero serving America.
Glad they blasted the perp. Good shooting.
Justified! IIRC, shooting a Police K-9 is the same as shooting a human LEO.
I believe that is the law...the K-9’s are “police officers” and have a grade.
Prayers for a speedy recovery Officer Boomer.
