Officials say a K9 was shot and a suspect killed after an office-involved shooting Monday in St. Paul.

The incident happened in the 1500 block of Iowa Avenue East on a report of an armed intoxicated man in an alley around 6 p.m., according to St. Paul Police.

St. Paul Police spokesman Pete Panos says three officers responded and opened fire on 34-year-old Robert Jerome Jeske, of St. Paul. Jeske died at the scene.

During the confrontation, the dog Boomer was shot. He was taken to the University of Minnesoeta were he underwent surgery and is in stable condition, according to police.

Panos says the three officers will be placed on paid-administrative leave per department standards.

Boomer was recently featured on the Animal Planet show ‘K9 Cops.’ According to the show’s website, Boomer is handled by Officer Patrick Murphy. Boomer is a patrol dog, trained to use his nose to find people and evidence.

The K-9 (Boomer) is going to be OK.

Not so, for the BG.

Police aren’t f—king around now. After watching their brothers in Oakland and Pittsburgh get gunned down they ain’t taking any chances. Perp was probably Somali IMO.

Prayers for Boomer.

I don’t know who has the doggie ping list, but slings and arrows has the kitty list.

Bleah on ambiguous headlines.

I thought the pooch had managed to shoot the suspect. He would deserve a double ration of Milk Bone for that.

Did the perp shoot Boomer or was it freindly fire?

suspect killed

This is ONE instance where I would value the life of a dog (or any other animal) over the life of a "human." Thank God the K9 is stable and the perp is neutral(ized).

BTW the only other instance I could think of is my dogs' lives over a burglar's. Except in those rare instances... PETA and their fellow travellers can take a hike.

From the original story:

A police K9 dog was sent after the suspect and the man shot the dog. At that time, three responding officers opened fire, killing the suspect.

Note that just any old Minnesotan dog owner could not shoot someone who had just shot his dog.

Your average Minnesota dog owner isn't called on to investigate shots fired, or send his dog in to try to winkle the suspect out.

Once shots are fired, all bets are off.

Anyway, if Y.A.M.D.O. just said, "He shot my dog, and then he turned and pointed the gun at me," he could shoot the guy too (as long as the guest of honor didn't survive and tell a different story).

There are plenty of instances where I value the life of a dog over that of a human—any time the human is a violent thug.

The dog doesn’t make decisions about right or wrong...he simply exists. And looks at you funny.

Only a person has the ability to purposefully decide to destroy someone else’s life via murder/rape/torture, etc.

To me there is no moral ambiguity in stepping between an evil attacker and his potential victim with the force it takes to stop him...be it an innocent creature like Fido, an innocent child, or a little old lady who’s led a far-from-innocent life :-)

IMHO, canines should only be used for search and rescue. Not for subduing criminals.

We’re not certain about that...yet.

I can see that I’m not about to make anybody happy here.

Our dog pounds kill thousands of dogs every day. No matter how wonderful the dog was it was only a dog.

If I was in an alley, had a few drinks and a big dog came at me and I had a gun I think my first instinct would be to shoot the dog.

Killing the bad guy for protecting himself, just at first glance to me seems a bit strong.

Seeing the posts about “friendly fire” possibly hurting the dog prompts me to remind everyone that the dog can give as good as it gets. I refer to the time Onondaga County (NY) sheriff’s deputies attempted to subdue a naked Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka in a hotel hallway. Eight deputies and a couple of police dogs went at the pro wrestler and subdued him, but only after several deputies were bitten by the police dogs. I guess you’d call that friendly fire too......
