NOT waiting for government help is what real Americans used to excel at : glad to see some still can think and act for themselves.

Why allow your enemy ,whether it be human, animal,or fire more time to establish itself ?

Nip it in the bud is a trite but true saying.

Thee CHEERS for the crew in this incident!

We may have to wait for “the book” to come out for all the details....

Sounds like Dad, the teacher at the academy is deservedly proud of his son...and crew.

Yes, I saw some talking head on CNN saying how these are poor out of work fishermen.

“They can’t help it.”

Hundreds of years of piracy.

Yep.

Foolish antiAmerican idiots.

US crew reportedly takes over ship from pirates

"WASHINGTON (AP) — The crew of a U.S.-flag ship seized by pirates off Somalia is believed to have retaken the vessel, the Pentagon said Wednesday, even as a shaken national security establishment confronted troubling questions about the hostage-taking at high sea.

Capt. Joseph Murphy, an instructor at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, told The Associated Press the Department of Defense that his son Shane, the second in command on the ship, had called him to say the crew had regained control.

"The crew is back in control of the ship," a U.S. official said at midday, speaking on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to speak on the record. "It's reported that one pirate is on board under crew control — the other three were trying to flee," the official said. The status of the other pirates was unknown, the official said, but they were reported to "be in the water."

The crew apparently contacted the private shipping that it works for. That company, Maersk, scheduled a noon news conference in Norfolk, Va, defense officials said.

The 17,000-ton Maersk Alabama was carrying emergency relief to Mombasa, Kenya, when it was hijacked, said Peter Beck-Bang, spokesman for the Copenhagen-based container shipping group A.P. Moller-Maersk."

this morning the US Navy said they had “boats” carriers etc about 250 miles away and were headed to the area... anyone know how long it would take to travel the 250 miles.

Our son deploys on a DDG in a few weeks for 6 months and my poor daughter in law is a wreck this morning thinking that pirates may board a DDG - I’ve done my best to comfort her as well as one can do via telephone.

No guns, could get in trouble in certain countries when docked. But they have other things.

[CNN is saying that 3 pirates escaped by “jumping” into the water]
That's the crew's story and they are sticking to it!! LOL.

I sure hope they were at speed when they "jumped". The screw would make for an interesting ride. Aloha Akbar sucker.

Don’t boats carry ‘flare guns’? *evil grin*

I suppose a flare gun up the okole would make anyone jump overboard!

Just because someone doesn’t have a verifiable source at the moment for a statement doesn’t mean that it won’t be confirmed within a short time as true. Perhaps “Robe” has, as I do, a source that is not always quotable for security reasons. Free Republic has members all over the world. Perhaps the father of the second in command of this vessel who was first contacted by his son saying the ship was retaken is a FReeper. Who the heck knows?!
