WASHINGTON (CNN) -- In a major departure from previous policy, the United States will join direct talks between U.N. and European powers and Iran over Tehran's nuclear program, the State Department announced Wednesday.
The Obama administration has asked the European Union's international policy chief, Javier Solana, to invite Iran to new talks with the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany, State Department spokesman Robert Wood said.
Washington, which does not have diplomatic relations with Iran, has stayed out of those talks to date.
"If Iran accepts, we hope this will be an occasion to seriously engage Iran of how to break the logjam of recent years and work in a cooperative manner to resolve the outstanding international concerns about its nuclear program," Wood said.
Iran has so far refused Security Council demands to halt its production of enriched uranium, which it has said will be used to fuel nuclear power plants. The United States has accused Tehran of concealing efforts to develop a nuclear bomb, and the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog agency said it has failed to resolve questions about the aim of Iranian program.

Hopefully, Israel will soon make these talks irrelevant and unnecessary.

I don’t think this is as big a departure as it’s been hyped. It’s one thing to have a one-on-one rap session and photo-op, as Obama proposed during the election. It’s quite another to have the U.S. be one of many countries negotiating directly. The “major departure” is that instead of going through other countries the U.S. will now talk directly? Really? As if no one knew we were the ones behind the curtain before.
Now, if Obama tours Iran like he toured Europe and bows to their leader like he bowed to the Saudi king, that’d be a travesty. But if all he does is send diplomats and join in the multi-nation talks, who cares? I know, I know, everyone says it’ll be the former. And it probably will be, knowing Obama and his “perpetual campaign” mindset. That would be a mistake.
Well of course Amadmanjihadi will sign the new accord with Obama and we will have a “Peace in our time” pact with the assurance that Tehran will not develop nuclear weapons. Hell even the Soviets will witness this Historic achievement and trumpet the U.S. as a force of goodwill in the World.
Millions in America will cheer the great successes of Dear Leadr Obama.... and then....
as history has shown time and again...
Millions will die to teach the same lessons to the same ignorant idealists.....
