Somali Pirates, U.S. Navy in Tentative Deal, One Pirate Says
Bloomberg | April 11, 2009 | Dick Schumacher

Posted on 04/11/2009 12:46:09 PM PDT by Zakeet

This story comes from Bloomberg -- which we cannot excerpt.

However, we can provide our own summary of the general gist of the article which is that one of the pirates has claimed both sides have agreed to a prisoner exchange -- our captain for four of their outlaws. The article goes on to warn that as of right now, this is by no means a done deal.

You can read the article HERE.

Nice. Deals beget more raids on shipping and hostages for the lucrative ransom "business model."

I just don't know what to say. I long for the days of Ronaldus Magnus.

The agreement would include the paying of a “small” ransom, Da’ud said, declining to be more specific.

I doubt there's really any ransom. This seems like an attempt by "Da'ud" to save face.

At least two problems.

One: they agree to pay a “small” ransom, whatever that means. Bad idea. Bad precedent.

Two: There are 16 other Americans who have been captured by the pirates, mostly as a response to this standoff. What happens to them?

I still say we should trade Obama for the Captain.

I thought those other 16 were Italians on a US owned ship?

Hopefully, Thomas Gainsborough is laughing at that one.

I wonder if the captain and his family would agree with you on that.

No I would hope they wouldn't. But a nation can't make its decisions based upon a families concerns.

There's no rush on this

Yes there is.

A clear and devastating message must be sent to these animals, that their actions will result in them getting their asses kicked.

End result: they will think long and hard before messing with us again.

Your solution is typical liberal BS that gets more people killed. It's the Carter solution.

Perhaps they shouted ‘Parley’ when the Navy arrived.

News said 10 on the tugboat were Italian. No mention of nationality of other 6.

$2 million down to 2 MREs, what they hey?

Now after dropping off the 4 Somalis into the life raft and returning the good Captain, we can all continue on our routine schedule.

Then the smoking lamp is lit and 5” gunnery practice open for all who seek to take aim. Targets?

And your course is the typical postion of someone perfectly willing to fight to the last drop of someone elses blood. You're awfully quick to kill off the captain, slick.

To: Not now, Not ever!

“The helicopter, with Phillips still onboard, then would return to a U.S. Navy vessel, Da’ud said.”

Then they hijack the US Navy vessel, while all the sailors are ordered to stand down by their Illustrious Commander-in-Chief,( may Allah be with him), Insha’allah!

What a stupid deal (if true)

Right. It sounds really plausible given that the pirates already reneged on the original deal -- exchanging the crew's captured pirate for their captain.

Why does the chopper have to pick up those "Somali mediators and elders" (most probably armed to the teeth), in order to pick up the pirates and their hostage, Phillips?

Why not just pick the pirates up and leave Phillips behind in the lifeboat?

And how "small" is that "small" ransom? Smaller than the TARP? The stimulas package? The budget?

Make the exchange. Capture the pirates. Publicly hang and quarter them.

Drudge. The early story said American ship and crew. I just checked and I see they now say Italian ship and at least 10 Italian crew.

I’m not sure that makes things any better. It seems to me that by dithering over this crisis, Obama has now succeeded in putting a German hostage and Italian hostages in danger. You could say that it’s their countries who are primarily responsible, but Obama has now managed to get the U.S. involved in the whole business.

And your course is the typical [position] of someone perfectly willing to fight to the last drop of someone [else's] blood.

I spent over twenty years of service in the U.S. Army "slick", so I wouldn't be so quick to draw that conclusion from the convenience of your recliner.
