As he scanned the cooler at a Grand Rapids store for a six pack, Jake Brenner had a three-word reaction to a proposed tax on beer.

"That would suck," said Brenner, 27, of Grand Rapids, shopping at Martha's Vineyard, 200 Union Ave. NE.

"It would be another slap in the face of the people. Beer is an affordable escape for the people. It sounds like a pretty poor idea."

A state task force on child welfare is expected to recommend this week a 5-cent-per-bottle tax on beer as a means of paying for child welfare reforms.

The current Michigan beer tax equals almost 2 cents for a 12-ounce beer, or $6.30 per barrel. It has not been changed since 1966, when the Legislature lowered it to its current rate.

It seems to me that if you want to pay for child welfare services with a tax, that tax should be levied on pampers and baby formula and food. Stuff that people who have babies buy.

If you want to fund anti-beer-belly and anti-beer-goggles services, THEN you tax beer.

I walked into the smoke shop monday to see the prices.

What was $15 is now $62.

I’d like to see what these tax supporters would have to say if they levied a 47,000 dollar tax on a 15,000 dollar car because the Gubmint doesnt like the pollution they make.
