SOUTH BEND, IND.
As church bells pealed, Claire Gillen, a Notre Dame freshman, stood on the stone steps of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, accusing this fabled Roman Catholic institution of sin and sacrilege.
"It's a scandal," said Gillen, voicing outrage over the university's invitation to President Obama, a supporter of abortion rights, to deliver the commencement address here on May 17.
Some alumni have called the campus, saying they have thrown away their Fighting Irish sweatshirts in disgust. The local bishop, John D'Arcy, has vowed to boycott the graduation ceremony. A visiting high school senior, Halley Chavey, who said she was thrilled just weeks ago to be accepted for admission, said she might reject the offer because the university is hosting "the most pro-abortion president we've ever had."
But for all the high-pitched indignation, the talk among students and faculty on this gothic campus of towering oaks and sculpted saints seems to reveal a strikingly upbeat mood about Obama's visit.
"Most of us are like, 'Wow, the president of the United States is coming,'" said Brett Ensor, a Texas native who belongs to the Knights of Columbus, opposes abortion and voted for the Republican candidate, Sen. John McCain. "What college wouldn't want Obama to come? This is a tremendous honor for us."
Threatened protests of the president's visit -- some conservative groups on campus have promised to stage demonstrations -- have left liberal students, like Max Young, cringing over the portrayal of Notre Dame as insulated and narrow-minded.
"If you can't speak openly at Notre Dame, who's going to want to come here?" said Young, a supporter of abortion rights, who noted that Catholic teaching endorses many of Obama's views, especially when it comes to aiding the poor and immigrants. "President Obama is one of us. He's on our side."

I have been a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus, they are a fraud starting with the third degree initiation .
The Knights 4th Degree march around with Fuzzy Hats and huge swords intimating they fight for the Catholic Church.
In this issue the Knights should be in the forefront of keeping Secular abortionists out of the school and out of the Catholic Church.
To allow this Murderer, to talk Legitimizes, the horror he invokes in supporting Murdering American and Other Children especially in Partial Birth Abortion.
I can’t imagine a classless Churl being given this honor, regardless of what ND Seniors say.
Evidently they learned nothing in their 4 Years at the UNiversity.
I don’t think Max Young is identified as being a Catholic—he may be, but not all Notre Dame students are. The wording of the part about him is ambiguous—is he a “liberal” who is “left cringing” or is he a “left liberal” who is “cringing”? Perhaps he’s one of those who think the label “liberal” is not sufficiently left-wing on its own.
The position of the Knights of Columbus towards abortion is clearly and unambiguously one of strong and consistent opposition.
The fact that the toad in question is a K of C member has no relevance to their position (and activities) in matters of abortion policy - just as the expressions of support for legalized abortion by isolated cleargy do not reflect the official position of the Vatican.
If you’re a third degree Knight and receive any publications from the order, you’d be aware of their opposition to abortion policy. That opposition does not however include the use of the ceremonial swords of 4th degree Knights on those they disagree with.
Young is one of many heretics who believe that it is okay to murder babies as long as the authorities aid the poor and immigrants. It is okay to overlook such matters because they are not front and center political issues, just a small price to pay to help the poor and immigrants, ensure that you have a good job, and that you get your "bennies." But the Democrats have been supporting a culture of death for a long time.
The heretics do not realize that they can have someone in authority help the poor and immigrants while, at the same time, stopping murder of the unborn. Too many Democrats fail to stand united to produce candidates who supports their positions on the poor and immigrants, while protecting the very life of the unborn. The holocaust is becoming but a fraction compared to the mass murder of the unborn. Freely killing the young gives people the idea that they can take a "rain check" on an abortion.
Such acceptance of killing supports a culture of death making more "sense" to more and more people the notion that killing is good thing when applied to the old, infirm, and unborn. It can save a lot of money that can be used instead to treat the young, productive members of society. All you have to do is arbitrarily define when life begins, base medical care on that age of the people being treated, and follow the notion that such people are less than human, and therefore okay to dispatch at your convenience.
When will these heretics realize what they are doing to themselves and our country and repent? What will it take for them to field candidates that protect life?

I just got into a tiff with a FReeper about how we should not enable sinners and how standing firm to the consequences of sin, discourages that sin.
She told me I was out of control. Go figure.
