Glenn Beck unfiltered
Real Clear Politics ^ | Salena Zito

Asked why his new show on Fox News Channel is so popular, Glenn Beck is uncharacteristically muted: "I am just a guy."

Beck is a guy, but "just" is not the word that most people would use to describe him. Just ask any fan or foe.

The radio talk-show host, former host of a CNN Headline News program, and now Fox host owes his success largely to an every-man appeal, spoken without a filter.

In other words, he forgets to use his "inside" voice.

On the other hand... I wonder which "voice" Obama uses...

Finally an honest and worthy report on Glenn Beck.

I’ve only recently started watching his show. Definitely different. Fresh. I like his monologues the best. But sometimes his guest interviews are hard for me to watch. Too much interrupting before the guest has a chance to say more than one sentence. Too short of an attention span. Sometimes too goofy. Like a kid with ADD. But my style would probably bore people. In other words, almost perfect — a big hit.

The DUmmies are absolutely unhinged regarding Glenn Beck. They think he is evil/Hitler incarnate.

"Like a kid with ADD"

You actually hit the nail on the head. Glenn has spoken many times on his radio show about his ADD. At one time he was trying some different medications for it, but he hated how they made him feel and, if I recall correctly, decided that it was better to just be himself even if it is distracting at times. He generally has fun with it instead of making it into a negative.

with painstaking research to back it up

This is one thing I've respected about Beck for years. We've been listening to his radio program since he was our "local afternoon" talk show host.

He always does his research, and if he doesn't know, he doesn't fake it. He says I'll look it up and get back to you. I'm convinced some show hosts get their material from FR, which isn't a bad thing, except they don't give FR any credit, LOL, they act like they've just "discovered" this tidbit or that. Beck is meticulous about his "homework."

He does suffer from ADD, even tried meds for awhile a few years ago, but he said he hated the way they made him feel.

I think that’s when the sobbing on air really picked up.

I’ve been listening to him since 2000...he’s always cried, it’s nothing new.

I’ve said it before, but I grew up with a dad who was fairly unemotional, but if you got him talking about certain subjects, he’d tear up, his voice would crack and he’d cry. Glenn’s the same way, certain things get to him. GWB was the same.

No disgrace IMHO.

I would virtually guarantee you Rush does just that. I've heard him come up with ideas and quotes that could pretty much have only come from here.

I’ve been listening to him a pretty long time too. I think Glenn rules. You don’t think his sobbing has increased in fequency the last couple of years? I sure do. He sobs at the drop of a hat nowadays, where he used to only get choked up occasionally.

If the left didn’t have something or someone to hate they would explode. So if they ever do get eveything they want their lives will just be over and we get to watch. :)

Beck is always unfiltered. Unfortunately, some filtering is necessary. His recent on-air blubbering has really made him an easy target of parody.

I agree about Glenn doing his homework.

He has an excellent staff, too. Stu and Dan are great at researching things.

There seem to be “triggers” for his crying (and that’s how my dad is.) Used to be everytime he’s mention Mary (his oldest who has CP) or anything about a child with a disability he’d cry.

Nowadays though, I think he cries more about patriotism and freedom, but I think that’s because he’s gotten more “into” or I should probably say informed, about what’s really happening in our country.

He took the ADD drugs several years ago, and came off them rather quickly, so I don’t think it has to do with them.

My wife & I saw Glenn in Portland Maine around Christmas for his tour. Hilarious. Non-political (Repubs vs. Dems), but definitely conservative vs liberal.

I had never listened to Beck before Fox put him on. And I watched the first few shows and the emotionalism put me off. Then, after a few more shows, I got over it. I love his show. Even the goofy part.

He would be a good teacher--he is master of the whiteboard and sharpie--I'm sure this is a frustration for Rush, because he can't talk numbers on the radio. It just doesn't work. People have to see numbers to follow.

I expect Beck's show to keep growing, and O'Reilly has to feel him nipping at his heels.
