After her sport utility vehicle sideswiped a van in early February, Shirley Kimel was amazed at how quickly a handful of police officers and firefighters in Winter Haven, Fla., showed up. But a real shock came a week later, when a letter arrived from the city billing her $316 for the cost of responding to the accident.
I remember thinking, What the heck is this? says Ms. Kimel, 67, an office manager at a furniture store. I always thought this sort of thing was covered by my taxes.
It used to be. But last July, Winter Haven

This keeps getting better and better...
I was ringing up a customer the other day, and she was going over her receipt (yes, there are people like that in this world!) and she exclaimed, “That purchase cost me $5 in state sales taxes!” to which I responded, “Welcome to Wisconsin! Our Democrat Governor sends his regards!”
She half-heartedly laughed...just to be polite...because I know her and she’s a raging Liberal 0bama voter, LOL!
Hopefully something CLICKED in her pea-sized brain...though I doubt it. *Rolleyes*
Yet more fine examples of Reagan’s trickle-down economics; government incompetence with money trickles down to affect the citizen.
My wife is one of them. And she finds errors. Usually at the grocery store where the cashiers are barely literate.
I don’t mind people checking. It gives us a chance to converse and build a better customer relationship for their next sale. :)
But, yes, there are illiterate dopes out there in charge of our money. Just look at Congress!
I would put it towards my insurance claim.
Looks like Winter Haven has more police officers than they need to do the job. Here is a good opportunity to permanently reduce expenses...

President Obama had nothing to do with July...lol.
In what way are there errors? I find it hard to believe the register made an error.
Wisconsins governor, James E. Doyle, has proposed a charge on slaughterhouses that would be levied on the basis of each animal slaughtered. He also wants to more than triple the application charge for an elk-hunting license to $10, an idea that has raised eyebrows because the elk population in the state is currently too small to allow an actual hunting season.
Those dems. Willing to tax something that doesn't even exist. Yet.
Me too...and you also have to check your groceries to make sure they are all there when you get home. As I live in a rural area, I have had dinners completely ruined when an item or two was left out when they bagged them, such as avacado or tomatoes for a Mexican dinner. And you don't even want to get me ranting about putting detergents or pesticides in the same bag with my food items...argh!
Thanks for posting. Laboratories of democracy have turned into stomping grounds for socialists.
The cashier can accidentally ring up an item twice, charge you for the higher priced organic veggies when you bought the regular ones or charge you the regular price if something is on sale. That is just 3 examples that have happened to me and immediately come to mind. Cash registers are not fool proof, it depends on how big of a fool is operating it ; )
Things rung up twice. Things that are on sale not ringing up at the sale price. Last week, the "register" charged $15.37 for a 12 pack of Diet Squirt (cans) that was listed on sale as 4 for $9. Cashier keying in the wrong code for produce. Coupons not doubling or not being swiped.
bttt
Which is why I use the self checkouts. If anyone is going to fool me it's going to be ME.
