Fiat chief executive Sergio Marchionne says Chrysler tie-up off unless unions take pay cut

Fiat would walk away from a tie-up with US carmaker Chrysler unless unions agreed to a new, lower wage deal, Sergio Marchionne, the chief executive of the Italian motor manufacturer, said.

In an interview with Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper, Mr Marchionne said he would scrap the deal unless Chrysler unions agreed to match the lower costs of Japanese and German-owned plants in Canada and the US.

"Absolutely we are prepared to walk. There is no doubt in my mind," Mr Marchionne said in comments published online. "We cannot commit to this organisation unless we see light at the end of the tunnel."

He claimed there was only a 50-50 chance that the partnership would be formed because of the lack of progress on labour negotiations.

Which is kind of ironic, because normally it's Italian unions that kill a company (Alitalia?).

I hope this gets resolved soon.

My father-in-law indirectly works for Chrysler and needs his knees replaced.

He’s only a couple years away from retirement...

Unions have taken a fine company and turned it into a dog with fleas.

You all do know that Fiat bought another car company not too long ago?

This one

At least the Fiat guy has some brains about this. I wonder what kind of pressure Obama is going to try and put on an Italian company? Try strongarming them!

No, he’s been a truck driver for 30+ years and it killed his knees.

He is pro-union but we still manage to get along. ;)

Marchionne just made Obama and the UAW an offer they couldn’t refuse. Let’s see if they’re stupid enough to try.

It’s funny. Obama ordered Chrysler to join with Fiat. He forgot to order Fiat to comply. They didn’t get the fascist memo.

Obama wants Fiat to do what he doesn’t have the guts to do!

Fiat is crazy. Don’t they know what happened to Daimler when they did a deal with Chrysler? They should go for a cross-selling agreement instead of trying to get a stake in Chrysler. That way they get access to the U.S. dealer network without the headache of dealing with the UAW.

Perhaps Marchionne does not want to repeat the mistakes of Prince Bernhard who had to resign his leadership of Bilderberger over a bailout corruption scandal. In the 1970 US bailout of Lockheed , US tax money was used to Bribe Prince Bernhard to lobby world leaders into selecting Lockheed contract bids over other competitors. Marchionne , a fellow Bildeberger with Chris Dodd, knows there is high risk in working with Senate Banking committee to finance this merger. With Marchionne sitting on the board of UBS and UBS receiving US tax payer bailout money through AIG there is high risk of a corruption case. Also , looking at the GM situation, Marchionne can now see the promises of continuous subsidies may be false. The ONLY reason FIAT wants this deal is the expection of receiving guaranteed cash flow of $5 billion a year from the US government.

This is where the rubber meets the road. The Marxist Onada tried to use the Fiat lash up with Crysler as a way to show that Chrysler management was not making enough changes in the company for Fiat to bite.

This bolstered his implicit argument that it is simply a Crysler management problem. Now Fiat blows that nonsense up by stating clearly that it wants labor rate cuts before it will consider a Chrysler deal. Of course, Onada’s real objective is to protect the union. It’s called pay back.

Why is it that almost everything The Messiah does blows up in his face?

Now there is somebody with business sense. Cut labor cost by 30 percent and I might reconsider my boycott.
