Gov. Rick Perrys (R-Texas) star is rising among a new constituency the anti-tax tea party crowd in the wake of his recent endorsement of a Texas state House resolution affirming the states sovereignty.
The resolution urges that all compulsory federal legislation that directs states to comply under threat of civil or criminal penalties or sanctions or that requires states to pass legislation or lose federal funding be prohibited or repealed.
Perrys public embrace of that language a thinly veiled reference toward the conditions set by the Obama administrations financial stimulus package and his efforts to reject some of the stimulus funds have made him popular among the big government opponents who attended Wednesdays tea party events across the nation.
I believe that returning to the letter and spirit of the U.S. Constitution and its essential 10th Amendment will free our state from undue regulations, and ultimately strengthen our Union, the governor said. I believe that our federal government has become oppressive in its size, its intrusion into the lives of our citizens, and its interference with the affairs of our state.
Perrys April 9 endorsement failed to generate much media attention until Tuesday, when the widely-read Drudge Report announced in blaring all-caps, WAKE UP CALL: TEXAS GOV. BACKS RESOLUTION AFFIRMING SOVEREIGNTY. Since then, his political stock has soared.
The governor spoke at three tea parties across Texas and had eight radio and television interviews scheduled for Wednesday. Perry also helped promote the tea parties in the days leading up to Tax Day by beating the drum on conservative Sean Hannitys popular radio show, among other broadcasts.
During an interview with CNBCs Larry Kudlow, Perry directed protesters to be loud and be consistent and keep sending the message to Washington.

It's important not to be diverted by other cultural and economic issues that will fracture the majority. Arguments on other issues can be tabled until the proper forum is in place-- the state forum. People can differ on issues, but I believe a majority understand that DC is the problem.
America's sole enemy is bipartisan, totalitatrian Moscow on the Potomac- we can unite on that.

Perry is on the moderate end of conservatism.... remember he wanted to inject every little girl with Guarasil

Agree, he’s a jerk. But he did call it right by stating that Texas does not have to stick with the rest of the US if it doesn’t want to.
Ping.
yes, thats true. Once we secede he can run the Moderate Party of Texas and its 8% of the voters.
He has “Good Hair” too.
To bad he is a RINO.
But he’s a savvy political opportunist. He jumped on this bandwagon PDQ!
Follow up the Tea Party with a phone call to your U.S. senator advising them to vote NO on the budget. Encourage others to do likewise. And, the true power is at the polls in 2010!
He’s on the democrat end of it. I wish he wouldn’t go places where he’s not wanted.
To bad he is a RINO.
Yeah, would he be running to the right if he wasn't concerned that Kay Bailey had better hair?
Not a chance.
Thanks AAC. I’m truly perplexed with the cynicism I run across on the threads featuring Rick Perry. As if to say, “You may think Rick Perry is hot stuff but I’m here to tell you he ain’t Second Coming”! You mean he’s not perfect? Quite the shocker, eh. The governor of the second most populous State in the nation is taking a stand on an issue we almost universally agree on, a rarity in itself, and people take childish cheap shots at him. I don’t get it.
