Corpus Christi Caller Times April 15, 2009

CORPUS CHRISTI — A growing crowd of more than 500 people gathered at the Lawrence Street T-Head Wednesday afternoon for a Tax Day Tea Party to protest what participants call out-of-control federal spending.

Many people waved U.S. flags, wore shirts with Texas flags or carried signs with slogans including “Your mortgage is not my problem.”

The protesters threw burlap sacks of tea into Corpus Christi Bay as a reference to the Boston Tea Party. The bags were on ropes so they could be brought back to the T-head and they could be re-used. As they began throwing the tea bags, the crowd began chanting, "Revolution".

Some people pinned tea bags to their shirts.

When talk radio host Eric Von Wade, who was broadcasting live from the event, asked how many in the crowd had never been to a protest before most in the crowd raised their hands.

Tea party protests, led mainly by conservatives, were occurring across the nation today to voice frustrations over the federal government’s economic policies. The local event, promoted by Von Wade, is one of 60 in Texas, according to the Tax Day Tea Party Web site.

Can you believe the "Award Winning" Corpus Christi Caller-Times says that only 300 people showed up a the Tea Party on the T-Head?

This is interesting. Jaime Powell upped the estimate from 300 to about 500. The story was originally published at 4:14pm just a few minutes before I got there, and said it was over 500.

Google still shows the original headline as 300

People I talked to estimated 600 to 1,000. I think at it's peak it was about 800.

No. No way. I was there. It had to be 500 or 600.
I talked to a couple of cops who estimated it at about 500 or 600.
The Caller Times is a liberal rag.
Thanks for replying.

I just wanted to put this on the record permanently on Free Republic before it disappears from Google.

At least 600, I have in my Military Career had 350 to 400 troops in formation in front of me every day... in ranks or in a gaggle I can guesstimate with non scientific but more accurate than MMGW Scientists that we had more than 600 before 5:00 pm when I left, there were another 50 or 60 en route on foot and many cars (police were having to direct traffic because of the backup caused by traffic lights) while I was leaving. 1,000 after 5:00pm would not be a stretch at all. I drove North and South on Waterfront and there was not a single parking space open from the Bank Center to well past the Surf Club.
