Amidst all of the American flags and presidential seals, there was something missing when President Barack Obama gave an economic speech at Georgetown University this week -- Jesus.
The White House asked Georgetown to cover a monogram symbolizing Jesus' name in Gaston Hall, which Obama used for his speech, according to CNSNews.com.
The gold "IHS" monogram inscribed on a pediment in the hall was covered over by a piece of black-painted plywood, and remained covered over the next day, CNSNews.com reported.
The Washington Times' Belief Blog asked the university about the presidential request:
Julie Bataille from the university's press office e-mailed me that the White House had asked that all university signage and symbols behind the stage in Gaston Hall be covered.
"The White House wanted a simple backdrop of flags and pipe and drape for the speech, consistent with what they've done for other policy speeches," she wrote. "Frankly, the pipe and drape wasn't high enough by itself to fully cover the IHS and cross above the GU seal and it seemed most respectful to have them covered so as not to be seen out of context."
While the "IHS" directly behind where Obama spoke was covered over, CNSNews.com said the monogram was still visible in 26 other places in the hall during his speech. Those areas just weren't as prominent.
The Belief Blog talked with the Rev. Thomas Reese, a senior fellow at the Woodstock Institute at Georgetown University, who said he didn't think "this is motivated by theology, but by communications strategy."
The blog also talked with Catholic University spokesman Victor Nakas, who felt a bit more strongly on the subject:
"I can’t imagine, as the bishops’ university and the national university of the Catholic Church, that we would ever cover up our religious art or signage for any reason," Mr. Nakas wrote. "Our Catholic faith is integral to our identity as an institution of higher education.

This is much more clear than the story yesterday - the President basically asked for a clean stage, not anything specifically anti-Christian. This is normal, as far as I can tell.
It’s shows that those Jesuits who run Georgetown have no cojones. It is supposed to be a Catholic university—what? it’s covering up its Catholic identity

Georgetown is in DC the same as the WH and Capitol.
Obama wanted to use the whole unviersity as a prop to imply he was saying something more sunstantive, even scholarly thna is he walked out of the WH with his telepromter in hand.
The university should have told him..this is our stage...you want “university” on demand, take it as it is.
Wait till Notre Dame gets the same request for Touch Down Jesus.
Obama just wants to respect separation of church and state. I mean, when the pope visits heads of state, he requests that they remove all flags, symbols, and references to their governments, right?

I’m sure neither Obama nor his WH minions thought Jesus was “missing” during the speech: his replacement by The One surely was a more than adequate substitute. It’s pretty amazing: a “Christian” Obama bowing before a Saudi king, but refusing to be upstaged by the Son of God. Wow!
Obama is at best only peripherally Christian. He was not raised Christian but basically like his mother agnostic— (was raised exposed to Islam while in Indonesia, but not Muslim really). He got involved in Rev. Wright’s church because he knew that to have any cred in the black community it is better to be connected with a church. There are dozens of black churches in Chicago that Obama could have gotten involved with, but Wright’s church met up to Obama’s ideological criteria.
You beat me to it...funny how they all “found” the Lord just a few short months ago, including Thunder Thighs Clinton. Boy, that didn’t take long, did it?
I was looking at a google image search of Presidents Bush43, Bush41, and Reagan - it looks like they also had a clear stage when they spoke at a venue.
Thanks for taking the time to call. They need to feel the heat here before it becomes a much more intensive heat for their eternal souls.
What a disappointments our so-called institutions of higher learning have become. Georgetown and N.D. seem to be leading the way to kneel before obama and place him before all others.
That’s not the only place Jesus is missing from Zero’s life...
