"Tea Party" Protests Appear to Draw At Least 250,000

This is an update and probably the last one. Those of you who are interested in extending the analysis (there are undoubtedly many events missing, although most of the major ones should now be covered) are encouraged to do so at Wikipedia or elsewhere.

But, based on news accounts of 306 "Tea Party" protests in different cities across the country yesterday, I get a cumulative attendance of 262,025, with a fair number of (probably mostly smaller) events still unaccounted for.

These figures, wherever possible, are drawn from objective attempts to estimate crowd sizes, such as police accounts or estimates made by reporters. Organizers of these events have strong incentives to exaggerate crowd sizes. Participants in them may have some of the same incentives, and it is notoriously difficult for people to accurately estimate crowd sizes once attendance has reached more than a few dozen individuals.

I present this data merely as a reference; it is not intended as a value judgment about the success of the protests or their lack thereof. One should bear in mind that ours is a large country, and that gatherings of this magnitude (if several hundred individual protests can be thought of as a "gathering") are not especially uncommon. For instance, protests in favor of immigration reform drew several million participants in the spring of 2006, including several individual events of at least 300,000. Likewise, anti-war protests in 2003 involved attendance of at least 300,000 in a single American city (New York) on a single day.

In DC, they announced 3,000 from the stage while I was there. That looked reasonable. So, given this list shows 1,000 for DC, I would guess that 250,000 is a conservative (no pun intended) estimate. That is very encouraging.

Also, I don’t see Richmond, VA on the list and there was a tea party there as well.

PJTV has a count of almost 261,000 as of now but I don’t think all have been counted yet.

These numbers are way too low. 2000 in Houston? There were 7-8k at the downtown Houston event, and another 11k at two other events in the area. There were many other events in the area as well, which probably pushes the Houston area total to somewhere closer to 30k. I would say there were probably closer to 2 million protesters yesterday nationwide, maybe more.

Wow, these are pretty conservatives numbers also. I know many people at the St. Paul TP were saying at the peak there were 8000 to 10,000 people there although the Fox News reporter told me there were 2000 at the peak around 6 PM.

I arrived around 7 and the crowd had died out a lot, but I imagine there were probably a lot of late comers to most of these parties that would not be counted as part of the crowds at their maximum size points.

These figures, wherever possible, are drawn from objective attempts to estimate crowd sizes, such as police accounts or estimates made by reporters.

Like all “estimates” these are bound to be inaccurate. I was at the Atlanta Tea Party and the organizers announced at one point we were in the 10 to 15 thousand range. It felt more like 20,000 to me. My point is I will bet the real number attending tea parties yesterday was closer to 500,000 than this 250,000 estimate.

Objective sources, like reporters. LOLOL

Even if you use an average attendance of 500 per event, with over 2000 events, you get 1 million.

This “reporter” didn’t get this right.

The MSM is desperate to keep this under 500,000.

500,000 is the magic number for “movement”.

Movements have to be crushed because this becomes the counter revolution for obama’s socialist revolution.

Was there a tea party in Pelosi’s district? (murthas?)

THAT would be telling.

The Boston estimate (500, from the NYT), is WAY low. 1500-2000 is more like it (I was there).

For instance, protests in favor of immigration reform drew several million participants in the spring of 2006, including several individual events of at least 300,000. Likewise, anti-war protests in 2003 involved attendance of at least 300,000 in a single American city (New York) on a single day.

I think that is representative of the central planning and funding of left wing groups. Personally I think that it can be used against them. They really don't appear to have known how to attack yesterday. (Other than childish media insults)

I see a lot of them missing and a lot of them under counted. FoxNews said last night that there were 15,000+ at Atlanta.I don’t see the 900 that were here in our little 30,000 town.

The Fort Worth Texas one is BS. The stadium was full(only a few seating sections open..no more than 100) and the official capacity for LaGrave Field is 5100! There were at least 300-400 people standing up!

THIS IS BS!!

Wasilla AK had well over 500, perhaps as many as a thousand by the end of the Tea Party.

Houston downtown event alone had over 8,500 signature. Many, many people did not sign the registry sheets.

From the Houston Tea Party Society Website:

“.. just finished counting each and every one myself and according to the sign-in sheets, the total number of people who attended the 2009 Houston Tax Day Tea Party is 8532!

We know some did not want to sign anything therefore the total is probably closer to 10,000. “

This is about double the 5000 we anticipated. What a Tea Party!
