In Texas, 31% Say State Has Right to Secede From U.S., But 75% Opt To Stay
Rasmussen Reports ^

Posted on 04/17/2009 12:36:45 PM PDT by Scythian

Thirty-one percent (31%) of Texas voters say that their state has the right to secede from the United States and form an independent country.

However, the latest Rasmussen Reports poll in the state finds that if the matter was put to a vote, it wouldn’t even be close. Three-fourths (75%) of Lone Star State voters would opt to remain in the United States. Only 18% would vote to secede, and seven percent (7%) are not sure what they'd choose.

No, it’s not. And neither is a second revolution. Which, by the way, the some of the founding fathers indicated might be necessary in the future.

Strong words from a non-Texan.

My point is that there is no legal way to leave the Union and there is not enough support in my Texas to leave the Union.

No it is not 1865 but since 1865 the Federal Apparatus has become more rigid.

“Obama has been in office for less than 3 months, and already 31% of Texans are ready to secede.”

Interesting point.

Texas seceding would be too great a loss to the rest of USA, so I’ll vote to stay in USA and help the lesser states out.

But it’s not like I feel great about what washington DC does to us.

I had made the point on Texas board that secession in 1860 was actually a revolutionary act.

That said, we have a Federal Govt that is far more intrusive. As some point, asserting the power to say “NO” to defend one’s liberty becomes not just justifiable but necessary to freedom. It becomes no different from what happened in the American Revolution.

But freedom aint free, is it.

Need to bring up the Sam Houston quote that warned about the consequence of secession in 1860. See below.

I dont think today’s Federal Govt would have the stomach for the kind of fight that Lincoln waged to keep the union ...

“Let me tell you what is coming-—your fathers and husbands, your sons and brothers, will be herded at the point of bayonets-—You may, after the sacrifice of countless millions of treasure and hundreds of thousands of lives, as a bare possibility, win Southern independence ...but I doubt it. I will tell you that, while I believe with you in the doctrine of States Rights, the North is determined to preserve this Union. They are not a fiery, impulsive people as you are, for they live in colder climates. But when they begin to move in a given direction, they move with the steady momentum and perserverance of a mighty avalanche.”

Sam Houston -— Governor of Texas

“The only thing that is holding Texas back from that right now *is* Federal regulations. If we didn’t have those, we’d be laughing at the “energy crisis” as our hydrogen or electric trucks cruised around our nuclear-reactor-powered well lit streets, and electricity would be a low, fixed monthly bill. Air pollution would be extremely low.

The irony of it all is that this utopia would be possible for us if the Feds didn’t hold us back.”

TRUE!!! Eco-fascists are stopping us from exploiting our oil, natural gas, coal, uranium. We would be a huge energy powerhouse if not for the Feds holding Texas back.

Can Texas even survive without statehood. Before California’s financial difficulties, I think that state was the 10th best economy in the world. I am unsure where they rank now. Texas was not even on the radar screen so financially it might not be a great idea. What would Texas do? Become part of Mexico? Would it be the country of Texas. This is just weird and unnecessary. Would they come crawling back on their butts after Sarah becomes President? If they do this, I would hope we would not take any state back. How embarassing.

If Texas were to become a separate nation, and actually enforced the immigration laws and deported all illegal aliens in Texas back to Mexico and Central America, the percentage of the population of the Republic of Texas that is white would rise considerably.

All hypothetical, of course, but just sayin’.....

Gee whiz, which ghetto did they take this survey in? What time of day? Wish it wasn’t so laughable.

This Texan doesn’t care if we “cannot”, we’ll do it anyway.

We “can” if nobody stops us. And do you really believe the same people who couldn’t stomach 4000 military deaths half way around the world are going to stomach a military invasion of Texas? Please. This ain’t 1861.

Please provide documentation that it cannot.

See Declaration of Independance.

See Natural Law.

We “couldn’t” declare independance from the British either. How did that work out?

30 percent said they support secession in a poll reported on KRLD today. That’s about the same percent that favored independancein 1776.

One of the outcomes was the Union had more battle deaths than the Confederacy.

LOL! I've been wondering exactly where 'in Texas' this poll was taken....in big liberal enclaves of the metro areas or way out here in flyover country.

We “can” if nobody stops us.

If Texas secedes it will set an example for many other nation/states. Some might even join together on political, social or economic lines.

I thought the right to secede was part of Texas’ agreement when they entered the Union ... not subject to opinion.

To pollsters, everything is subject to opinion. That's their business.

I’m from Missouri, and I love my home state, but if Texas would secede, I’d like to become a citizen.

Anyway, I thought this was a free country. A state should be able to do what the majority of its people vote to do.

Oh, maybe it’s not so free.
