Kerry draws on '71 Vietnam testimony in asking current vets to speak @ 11:43 am by Michael O'Brien
Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry (D-Mass.) is drawing on his own background as a Vietnam War protester in inviting veterans of the war in Afghanistan to testify in front of the committee this week.
"One of the lessons that I learned a long time ago and lived out here was that it's important to listen to the troops, it's important to listen to the folks who are implementing these policies and putting their lives at risk," Kerry told National Public Radio in an interview. "And they often have perspective that isn't adequately heard."
Kerry's 1971 testimony, which called for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Vietnam, was controversially used in ads during the 2004 presidential campaign to damage Kerry's efforts.
"So I think it's very important to have that kind of a hearing, and I guess that's sort of one of the lessons from the past, if you will," Kerry added.
It’s a good idea to have leaders that served in the military, especially in wartime. They learn things about the military that can’t be learned any other way. I’d almost like to make it a requirement, but then we would have missed out on Reagan and Bush Jr.
ROFL, excellent. Thanks.
Who is Bush Jr?
Would that be the George Walker Bush who served in the National Guard?
Wasn’t there a war going on at that time?
W flew a not-so-reliable plane, too. I don’t think any of the delta-winged planes lasted in the inventory as long as the F-4 Phantom II (AKA the flying bus) or the F-16 Fighting Falcon.
I think Iraq vet David Bellavia of Vets for Freedom can kick Kerry’s ass.
I bet this guy is one of the featured speakers...
Good. I’d love to see it.
I spent more time in Vietnam sitting over the crap barrel than he spent in-country...FAKE!!!!!!!!
What would be great is if one of those testifying asked kerri to release his records like he promised he would. Won’t happen, but that would be funny.
I think that actually having served in a war theatre would be much more valuable experience than service at home in the National Guard. That is what I was talking about.
