Reverse Discrimination

The Supreme Court heard arguments in an important discrimination case brought by 20 firefighters from New Haven, Connecticut. They charge that the city passed them over for promotion, despite the fact they achieved high scores on their promotion test. Nineteen of the firefighters are white, one Latino. No blacks scored high enough to qualify for promotion. The city then threw out the entire test and promoted no one. The firefighters who passed the exam are claiming they were denied promotion because of their race.

All parties agree that the exam was absolutely "race neutral" and centered only on the specialized knowledge required for competent fire fighting and control. The consequences of the Supreme Court decision will be momentous. If the Court rules against the plaintiffs, this will be affirmative action on steroids. It will not only have continued the politicized favoritism of the less competent and qualified but it will seriously endanger public safety. Tragically, what would once have been simply a matter of common sense fairness is now turned into a bizarre Orwellian perversion of our entire constitutional justice system.

I saw it happen down here, a brother in law scored very well but no dice, he was told off to the side to paint himself black.

Because we are taught to be peaceful and law abiding this is being used against us now by the Racist Government!

If the first time they pulled that Crap we Rioted in the street and broke the place up real good then our children would have a fair chance in life.

I saw the CSpan coverage with the ABW (anybody but white) NAACP carping about the test. Disgusting!!

Yep....I saw the same CSPAN report...the dude had that funky red poka-dot bowtie on....said that the test was racially bias....give me a break! A test is a test. Obviously, those who studied made good grades, those who did not, did not make good grades. How can a test that measures intelligence be racial. That was a load of crap if I ever heard it.

Look in the paper for “Diversity” job fairs.

Diversity is code for “No Whites Allowed”

I hate this term “REVERSE DISCRIMINATION” ....there is no such thing....Discrimination is discrimination....One is just as ugly as the other....And yes, it is high time that the court rule on this, and rule justly....Hopefully they will.

Want some fun? Go over to the DUmmies board, and watch the moonbats tie themselves in knots over this subject. Anyone who dares suggest that what New Haven did was wrong is shouted down.

I am a first generation immigrant to the USA. Like most LEGAL immigrants, I appreciate the US better than these leftist Americans who have no clue how lucky and blessed they truly are to be part of this Great Nation.

These ungrateful b@$tards are out to destroy this great nation. I just wish they would just emigrate to the Europe and be European instead of tearing down the USA to be like Europe.

A workshop with 20 whites is in violation.

A workshop with 20 all black is considered “diverse”.

Diversity does not mean diverse. On the federal level it simply means ‘not White’.

Absolutely right! No such thing as “reverse discrimination”; discrimination is discrimination. We should never let these idiots frame an issue with their Orwellian language so that we always seem to be responding in a defensive, apologetic manner. We should be going for their throats instead.

Before I relocated to the Sunshine State, I had considerable teaching experience in the Garden State (N.J.), and had many black students in my classes. Most were totally unprepared for college level study. But this was part of the supposedly unconstitutional ‘quota’ system. I shared my concerns with various other teachers and directors of admissions but the near-universal response was a shrug of the shoulders and a reply that they were forced to put up with this for political/funding reasons. I tried, as best I could, to persuade them that this was grossly unfair to the very minority students that were supposed to be advanced and that, in effect, we were promoting the wrong values and motivations - namely, that one was ENTITITLED to be present and promoted because of past injustices and their race, and not because of present abilities and aspirations that required hard work and effort. I learned that logic and facts were of no importance. It didn’t matter that a huge number of the unprepared and unqualified had high drop-out rates; that they scored terribly on their GRE’s, that if they were (preferentially) admitted to graduate or professional schools, few finished. AND, that all this took place within the context of every effort being made to ‘push’ them through so the college could boast about and show the political establishment what a great job was being done with minority students. I apologize for the length of my reply (I could go on and on!) but I want to stress how unjust and politicized our present approach is to all concerned and our society. Thanks for your patience!

Damn right! We all know how he and Eric Holder (the one who recommended pardon for the fugitive Marc Rich, the FALN terrorists, etc.) and Obama will come down on this. By the way, before the election National Review magazine had a terrific article on how Michelle Obama benefitted from affirmative action - and how she wasn’t grateful but was hostile, bitter, and full of spite that this had happened. Really, a psychiatrist should now comment, not me.

I once attended a law school in a post-graduate level. 50% of my class was black.

Some of them were great but a couple of the black students were what I call “angry entitled”. Not only were they there on grant (not paying) but they were belligerent ignorant. They would loudly ‘AX’ questions and would get angry when their two paragraph legal dissertation got an undeserved ‘C’.

When they couldn’t understand something they got ghetto angry at the whole concept. Man you be tripin’ dat some stupid ass s t man.

They did not belong there and basically disrupted the whole class.

But of course they passed and graduated with the rest of us. And I am sure that their whole career will have people covering and tiptoing around them. And they will know it, expect it, and like it. Se la vie

I know exactly what you mean. It isn’t recognized how affirmative action policies degrade all backs, even those who work hard and have ability. For example, I was fortunate in being able to pursue my M.A. at an Ivy League university. There were a few present who were obviously there because of affirmative action and they were in over their heads. We (and I don’t mean only whites but Asians, etc.) privately laughed at them and referred to them as “affirmative action fakers.” To this day, I can’t help but wonder when I see an ‘educated’ black if he/she is also an “affirmative action faker” who deprived a more qualified person from getting an education who worked and sacrificed much more to get it. I know it’s wrong to prejudge or stereotype a person on the basis of race or ethnicity, but I can’t deny or forget my own life experience. And I adamantly maintain that any such preferences are not only un-American but don’t help - in the long run - those they were intended to help. Regards,

I think you’ve touched on something very important: the old question of heredity v. environment. Generally, liberals have attributed everything good or bad to environment. But they’ve ignored the fact that PEOPLE CREATE THEIR ENVIRONMENT according to their intelligence, abilities and values. In the most recent addition of “The Bell Curve,” (the late)Richard Hernnstein and Charles Murray state that it’s a fact heredity is not less than 40% nor less than 80% of a person’s capability. Therefore, they took the median figure of 60% to do their research. I’m oversimplifying, but their conclusion was that HEREDITY is the most single crucial factor in creating an environment. I can send you a recent article by Murray demonstrating how the superior intelligence of the Jews exemplifies this. I know that statement is controversial but you MUST read it to understand it’s real meaning.

Why do you think the IRS/Fed. Government is overrun with ignorant people?! It sure as hell isn't because they know what they are doing there! Don't even get me started on this subject!

I read the briefs and the transcript of the oral arguments. The white firefighters are going to win by at least 6-3.
