Fears that President Obama may have been exposed to swine flu grew tonight after it was revealed that a member of the White House team that went with him to Mexico is suspected of contracting the disease.
The president’s press secretary Robert Gibbs confirmed today that a member of the advance team that went to Mexico to check on security has fallen ill.
The man’s wife, son and nephew were also infected with flu and all four have tested as ‘probable’ with the virus. All four have recovered.
Mr Gibbs said the security agent was never in close proximity to the president during his trip to Mexico City on April 16.
Earlier this week, it emerged that a man who shook Obama's hand in Mexico died the next day from symptoms which are similar to those of swine flu.
The President's health advisers were already concerned about his visit south of the border after learning the contagious virus first struck in Mexico City on April 13 - three days before Mr Obama flew in to meet government officials.
Their alarm grew after the news that Felipe Solis, an archaeologist who received Mr Obama at a city museum, had died from pneumonia.
Mexican health boss Jose Cordova, however, said Mr Solis was already ill and his death was unrelated to swine flu.
Mr Obama was in Mexico for less than a day before heading to a Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago.

I don’t know why this is cause for alarm. The President has access to excellent health care. So, if he gets sick, then he’s just like the rest of us...

I just find it odd that the President goes to Mexico, apologizes for America’s arrogance and a day later the dude who shaked the Messiah’s hand catches a dose.
Sounds to me like our beloved President is ground Zero.
We can at least suspect it, if he goes one day without being in front of the television cameras.

If he has been exposed and does get it, he’s a young and healthy man with the best healthcare in the world and I’m sure he’ll be fine.
If not, then the Constitution already has a plan in place. Supposedly we have a government of laws and not of men.
But the good news is that he could have passed it on to Chavez when he shook his hand.
Probably. Far better to wish he would contract a bad case of complete and total truthfulness (like in the movie Liar Liar). Now that would be sweet! He would not be allowed to speak in public.
