“I know many of you here today are single payer advocates and so am I … and those of us who are pushing for a public health insurance don’t disagree with this goal. This is not a principled fight. This is a fight about strategy for getting there and I believe we will,” Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) told a group of government-run health care supporters on April 18.

Where is the opposition?

Is there still one?

There are, I am told, still several Republicans in Congress. They should be out there presenting alternatives.

The only way Government insurance would work for the uninsured would be to provide it at a steep discount. Once such a plan were made widely available insurance companies will find them selves in a no win situation. As customers jump lower cost taxpayer subsidized plan, the private business will be forced out of business.

“...who are pushing for a public health insurance...”

Public health insurance is like public education. It’s a scheme by the ruling class to get the middle class to pay for the lower class.

There have been people that have presented alternative plans, but they're pilloried by the extreme right. So, the choice becomes do exactly what the Dems want, or do nothing. We're going to get stuck with the Dem's plan.

Nationalized health care is going to happen before the 2010 elections. It won't be exactly what the Dems want, but it will be enough to eventually force the private insurers out of business in just a few years. Then, we'll have a single-payer system that is identical to the British or the Canadian system. Once we have that, we're never going back. Big, sweeping social programs never get repealed - ever.

That’s what the GOP party needs to do I was fine with them just being obstructionist when they could have stopped anything but now they need to fight in the court of public opinion..

I’m a “single payer advocate” too! People should pay their own damn bills and not whine that other people should pay them.

Many companies are already planning for the day that they can abandon their health care plans and dumb their employees on a new govt plan. Why would a company pay more for coverage if there is a govt approved plan?

Alternative plans? You mean something like democrat lite? And if they did offer a democrat lite plan like you said it would never get repealed and more than likely it would get expanded.

I can see that happening for sure.

When the Health Insurance industry is destroyed, there’s only one thing left. The Government and that’s what they want. Tax the people to death, control their health, decide who lives and dies..........total control.

When it’s a dhimmicrat that’s fighting, there are most certainly no principles involved.

I know a major American drug retailer that has said that about themselves. Guess they want to stop eating their own dog food.

The Republicans should have presenting a plan that ensures the ongoing viability of private insurance, well before the 2008 elections. So long as there is affordable private insurance, we'll never have a single-payer system. But, as it stands right now, the GOP doesn't even have the votes to be obstructionists. Health care is the SOLE reason that the Dems promised Specter that he wouldn't be challenged in the Dem primary.

Since the GOP has virtually no power to offer amendments in the House and they've lost the filibuster in the Senate, whatever the Dems want, short of single payer is going to happen. But, as this vieo points out, the Dems are going to write legislation that eventually puts the private insurers out of business - fait accompli.

If the GOP would have had a plan that the base could've rallied around and promoted, other than the status quo, perhaps there would be some hope. But, now the GOP is labeled the "do nothing" party and the Dems get to enjoy being the party of answers and ideas.

Perhaps the public plan could be made so bare bones (e.g. catastrophic coverage only) that private plans would remain highly desirable.
