A Mission Viejo high school history teacher violated the First Amendment by disparaging Christians during a classroom lecture, a federal judge ruled today.
James Corbett, a 20-year teacher at Capistrano Valley High School, was found guilty of referring to Creationism as religious, superstitious nonsense during a 2007 classroom lecture, denigrating his former Advanced Placement European history student, Chad Farnan.

Religious Ping!
This is not a good way to handle these situations. The anti-theists will simply use this as ammunition for their campaign to point out “Christian fascism”. What should have happened is that he should have been reprimanded by the administration and then it should have ended at that.
I guess he’s not really 20. That gave me pause.
Freedom of religion beats freedom of speech?
Great court ruling, Ping!
I disagree. Christians for too long have just turned the other cheek. I say fight fire with fire, in the courts, just like the ACLU. I am thrilled with this case.
The court ruled correctly, but the fact that someone like that is teaching in the first place says something about public education.
And he was punished?
NOW THAT IS A SHOCKER....
Bad ruling.
Baptist ping
Not so. Courts and school boards have already ruled that the classroom is a special case since students are a captive audience. Teachers may have freedom of speech but not freedom to impose their personal beliefs on said captive audience on the taxpayers' dime.
I would prefer a world where the teacher could speak freely and opponents could do as well. We are heading for the penultimate scene of the Magnificent Seven where all are just looking at each other pondering the weapons they carry.
DITTO.... we must fight back the same way they do....with the law in our hand...
WHAT’S GOOD FOR THE GOOSE...IS GOOD FOR THE GANDER....
I don’t know. They may use this as an excuse to get “under God” taken out of the pledge or to do away with the pledge altogether. Our current government is far more likely to side with anti-theists.
It’s hard to say how this story will be abused by the other side.
I see the problem as one where the student gets a bad grade due to arguing with the professor.
Look at the photo.
Doesn’t he look like a smug, condescending jacka$$?
Am I the only one who gets that impression?
I would prefer a world where the teacher could speak freely and opponents could do as well.
Not when they are teaching this kind of stuff. Besides there are no opponents in grade school or high school. There is no debating going on at these levels.
I don’t know how harsh the punishment should have been...but I am sure thankful that somebody is finally taking action against this.
I am sick of having to walk on egg shells for Islam, while they & other religious sects stomp Christianity. Maybe this will set an example for others trying to do the same thing.
