Iraq was home to some of civilization's first outposts and hosted conquerors from Alexander the Great to Americans.
Much of that priceless archeological heritage was lost and looted in the chaotic months after the U.S. invasion in 2003. Now, the Field Museum and the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute are part of an effort to turn things around: They're training Iraqi archeologists and cultural preservationists, who will return home to train their colleagues, in techniques that would wow Indiana Jones.

I thought most of them have already been recovered. Didn’t they find a bunch of them hidden right in the museum?

This is why these liberal rags are on the dinosaur media death watch.
Tourism is going to grow there by leaps and bounds as more of our heritage is uncovered.
Hey! I know Jim Phillip.... had dinner with him just a few weeks back. Great Guy!
I think you’re right, thousands and thousands of reminants remain. If they’re still finding new discoveries in Egypt, Iraq should yield every bit as much if not more in hidden treasures from ancient Babylon.

There are an estimated 500,000 possible sites for exploration in Iraq (covering Babylonian, Sumerian, Assyrian, Persian, and other cultures—up to and including the Jewish Talmudic schools at Pumbeditha).
In the last century, about 25,000 of these have been explored by archaeologists—which represents an amazing amount of work.
But that still leaves 475,000 sites more to go. (And a lot more tablets to deciper!)
