An aggressive coyote snatched a Chihuahua off a walking path within feet of the pet's startled owner and ran off with the helpless dog.
The woman rushed home and told her husband, who called police; the remains of the Chihuahua were later found in the Englewood park.
The Colorado Division of Wildlife is trying to track the coyote, said spokeswoman Jennifer Churchill, because the attack occurred so close to the dog's owner in a heavily used public space.
"We'll be tracking it over the next few days, trying to identify the right animal," Churchill said.
If wildlife officials positively identify the coyote in the attack, it will be destroyed, Churchill said.
The incident happened Tuesday evening on a trail in Belleview Park, near West Belleview Avenue and South Santa Fe Drive, near the Pirates Cove water park, Churchill said.

Just south of Denver.
Yo quiero Taco Bell.
Chihuahua Pockets. More than a snack. Less than a meal.
Well sure, coyotes eat rodents.
That woman should have been armed!
“That woman should have been armed!”
The dog should have been armored!
LOL! true!
Maybe its just me, but isn’t this a great example of why leash’s are a good idea?
Next comment. Around here (Southern Ohio) we shoot coyotes on sight, no questions asked, with any firearm at hand.
This ‘lets get the right one’ nonsense is why the coyote population has exploded to record levels.
See a coyote, kill a coyote. We hear them around our property every night, twice per night. 11:30 PM and again around 4:30 AM.
Police officer to coyote: “Are you the right animal, Sir?”
Coyote to police officer: “I swear it wasn’t me, Officer. It was my brother!”
Police officer to coyote: “Very well, I’m letting you off this time. But watch your step.”
Coyote to police officer: “Thank you, Officer.”
Boy, newspapers sure are good at finding these big stories. These reporters are really on the case.
What did you expect, lady? Walking with bait, and all that.
Coyote to rest of pack: “OK, who has chihuahua breath?”
Are there other types of coyotes that I haven't heard about?
But coyotes make such great pets because they are just like dogs so says some other pissed off Freeper who wants a coyote as a pet.
I’d like to see how that coyotes fares with a pitbull?
Put a little lap dog down in front of a pack of field Beagles, and they are likely to run it like it was a rabbit. I worked for a man who adopted a retired racing greyhound, she was a sweet dog, but she would run any lap dog until she caught it.
It is just plain dumb to put a tiny little dog like that on a nature trail. They put yappy little dogs next to Florida ponds and get upset when a gator shows up!
If people don't want to bother understanding nature they should stay indoors, with their little dogs!
There are still areas of the country, where you’d better have your lawyer on speed-dial if people plan on taking your advice.
It is a blanking Coyote! Kill every one you can find.
